Okay friends, the time has come for me to re-launch Split Decision.
I'm combining elements of the front game from the 1985 pilot with elements of my previous iteration from years ago for the end game, which can be seen on the Beta-Testing thread.
Rather than type out a long list of rules, I'll explain things as we go along, it is fairly simple to play.
The first two to sign up will get to compete in episode #1.
If you do sign up, kindly P.M. me also with...
A. Your first and last name (or last initial if you prefer that instead)
B. A short bio about yourself
C. 15 buzz codes (higher than 0 but lower than 101).
Thank you for your interest. I am most eager to present this and to see how it plays out.
Respectfully and appreciatively,
Bill

Frank Caliendo (imitating Gene Wood) This game is like Card Sharks But with a bit of revision So come join us for fun and excitement As we play… SPLIT DECISION! (Cheering & applause) With your host…who contrary to popular belief is actually playing with a full deck… the keeper of the cards… Bill McDee! (Cheering & applause) (giving Frank the evil eye & clearing my throat)… Yeah, that's me! Greetings, salutations and welcome aboard to Split Decision. This is a card game based on the casino game "Red Dog" or "Acey-Deucey". And yes, just like our sister show Card Sharks, in this game Ace is high and Deuce is low. I will explain more as we get into today's match. Right now, I'd like to introduce to you our very first two challengers here on Split Decision, one of whom will have a chance at the end of today's extravaganza, to win up to $75,000 in cash! (canned NBC "OOOHS & AAAHS") First up we have a basketball coach who also works at a bagel shop, Raymond Weaver! Raymond, welcome to Split Decision. You reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Sounds like a nice place to live. I would imagine during the summer when more vacationers visit there, your bagel shop's business picks up some. How many different types of bagels does your shop sell and what is the most popular one in your estimation?

we sell over 20 different varieties of bagels

Variety is the spice of life. My personal favorite are raisin cinnamon ones with cream cheese!
And you also are a basketball coach? What can you tell us about your team?

I’ve been working with them for eighteen years and this year we’re not having our best season, but it’s not over yet.

That's how it goes in sports as in life, ups and downs. The main thing is to enjoy the journey! And I hope you enjoy your journey here with us today Raymond, good luck to you in today's match.
And here we have Immanuel Tims, a high school senior from the Golden State. You are currently working on a couple of writing projects according to my information, yes? How is that going and what are they about if I may ask?

Post by babytims on Jan 26, 2023 9:46:29 GMT -5
They’re going splendidly! I’m writing a one man show for my senior project, I’m writing another drama script, and I’m writing a format for a potential podcast!
So as you can imagine, writer’s block can be ugly at times. But it’s so worth it

For me, at my age, I no longer suffer with writer's block, only writer's CRAMP!
And you will be graduating from high school come May or June of this year I'm guessing. College aspirations afterward Immanuel?

Absolutely. I graduate in June and I already applied to a few colleges, with a couple acceptances following!

Seems only yesterday I was in 12th grade. I remember eating out one afternoon and asking the waitress if I qualified for the "Senior" discount.
Now a great many years later, I'm closer to qualifying for that than ever!
Immanuel best wishes to you with your writing, your future education and with our little game here today.
I'm going to put you to work Immanuel as I am now breaking the seal on a freshly shuffled deck of 54 playing cards. A standard deck of 52 cards plus 2 Jokers in the mix.
I'll explain about those if and when they turn up.
Meantime Immanuel, would you kindly cut the deck by selecting a number higher than 0 but lower than 54 please?

I thank you Immanuel. Let us commence with game one of our match. The object of our game is to win control over those cards. You will do that by answering a toss-up puzzle. I will show you two words that are "split" by a third word. That third word will only have the first letter revealed. It is up to the player who rings in first to identify what that word is to link that split together. Here's an example... What word, beginning with an "S" links together BANANA and DECISION? Audience? Gallery yells out "SPLIT!" And that's absolutely right. And audience that is the ONLY time you will be allowed to shout out a puzzle answer today. Once we get the card portion of our game going, you can of course shout out advice to our two contestants. Here now is our first toss up for hand number 1 of GAME number one of this best two out of three match... What "D" connects the two split words... SNARE and STICKS? Raymond you rang in first. We need your answer no later than 5:25pm EST on Saturday, January 28th. Either an incorrect solve or time running out will automatically give control of the deck to your opponent.

And to use a basketball term Raymond, you just scored your first field goal of this day! Now you control the deck. The object now is for you to create as wide a split for you as possible while giving Immanuel a much more narrow split if possible. We will reveal the first card to you Raymond, and then you will decide if you wish to keep it for yourself, give it to Immanuel, or place it in the center as the "Common Card"... First card up is... A Queen, a fairly high card Raymond. Do you want to give it to yourself, or to Raymond, or do you want to place it in the center as the "Common" card?

I’ll keep it.

The Queen is yours and now this next card you'll have to decide whether to put it in the middle or to pass it to Immanuel... A Nine. If you put that in the middle Raymond, you'd have a very narrow split from a 9 to a Queen. Or you can give it to Immanuel hoping that the next card we turn up will be a low one. Your decision, how do you want to play it?

I’m going to pass it.

(applause) The audience seems to agree. Now let's see what that center COMMON card will be.... (gasps and groans) Yipes! Tough break there. Raymond, you will need a Queen or a King on the next draw to win this first hand. Immanuel, you'll need a 9, 10, Jack, Queen or King to fit the split. One narrow split, one EXTREMELY NARROW split. This next toss up will determine control of the next card and it's important! What P links: SURPRISE and FAVORS? Raymond you are in first again and have until 6:25pm EST on Saturday, January 28th to post your answer.

Right you are Raymond!
Now it is decision time.
Do you want to keep this next card? If so, it must be a King or a Queen in order for you to win this first hand and $200.
Or do you want to give it to Immanuel, and try to "bust" him, in which case you would win the hand.
Keep the card or pass it?

Five cards will win you the hand, Immanuel. He's wanting a 9, 10, Jack, Queen or King to win, as a tie card equals a win here in the main game. Raymond wants to see anything other than those cards... The card is... A five! NOT a fit! Raymond takes hand #1 and $200! (ding ding) (applause) That is why winning control over the cards is oh so important in this game! Now that we have whetted your appetite for how the game works, we'll take a quick time out. When we return, we'll finish game 1 of this best 2 out of 3 match... More after this, please stay tuned!

(Question: the cards have to be split…meaning one high card and a low card, right?)
|
|
|
Post by billmcdee on Jan 27, 2023 4:34:44 GMT -5
That is correct. Once a split is established, the third card must fall in between the other two, or at the very least tie one of the other two.
So an Ace 2 split would be a winner no matter what card got placed.
If you had a 4 to a Jack, you would win if the card for the "fit" would be a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or Jack.
There is one special situation which I will talk about when I make the next post.
I'm glad to answer any other questions. I would recommend too if you are able to do so, to check out the Split Decision Pilot episode on Youtube.
Best,
Bill

(applause) And welcome back to SPLIT Decision friends! We just started game #1 of our best 2 out of 3 match. Raymond leads 1 hand to nil, but it takes 3 hands to win a game. First player to win 2 games becomes the champion and plays our Pot Limit end game which could be worth as much as $75,000 today! During the first 2 games of the match, the first hand is worth $200, hand 2 is $175, hand 3 $125, hand 4 if played will award $75 to the winner of that hand, and if we have to go to a 5th hand, another $50 awarded to the winner of that hand. Any money won is kept however the first player to win 3 hands will win an additional $250. Should a player win 3 hands to 0, they will win $500 instead of just $250. Lastly there is a $500 bonus any time a player gets 3 of a kind. For example, if a player's split is a 3 with another 3, and they receive yet ANOTHER 3, that would fit, and would be 3 of a kind, so that's a $500 instant bonus. Right now, we're going to play another toss up puzzle to win control of the deck. We are using the same deck throughout this first game of the match, so if you can remember what cards have already been played, that may help you out. When we start game 2 of the match, we will do so with a brand new freshly shuffled deck of 54 cards. If we have to play a 3rd game tie-breaker, I'll explain that if and when it happens. Meantime, what V connects these 2 split words? MIAMI V SQUAD Immanuel is in first, you have until 5:50am EST on Sunday, January 29th to post your answer.
