As I try to figure out what to do about TTD, I've decided to take a crack at a quizzer I did many, many years ago. Yet, it's still one of my favorites: SPLIT SECOND.
For the most part, it will be faithful to the 1986-87 version hosted by Monty Hall. Here's how it works.
GETTING STARTED
- Three players, one a returning champion (except for the pilot and for a car win), will compete in a game of skill, speed, and sabotage.
- Once the three players are chosen, each will submit 30 buzz codes 1-100 (preferably, 3 lines of 10 numbers each) to use in the three rounds. Then, the fun begins!
ROUND ONE
- All questions have three parts (labeled A, B, and C), but each player will only need to provide the answer to one of those three parts.
- I'll pose the questions one at a time, then simulate the ringing in by comparing the players' buzz codes to a pre-selected buzz code, with the closest one winning the right to answer first, the second closest going second, and the furthest going last. Should there be a tie, the player who sent his or her codes first wins the priority.
- If a player provides a right answer, that part will be closed, and the player will share part of the money for the question, depending on how many others give a right answer. If a player misses, then that part remains open for the other players (EXCEPTION: If it's a two-choice proposition, like a yes/no question, then that part closes).
- There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so you are encouraged to guess!
- There is no need to wait for me to acknowledge a right or wrong answer. Once a player gives an answer, the next player may go, provided you go in order. I will interject if I'm on, or if I need to do so (for instance, to correct a player on a question or to clarify that an answer a player thought was open was actually closed, with all adjustments made as needed). Failure to go in order will disqualify you for the question.
- SCORING: If all three players provide a correct answer, it's $50 apiece. Two correct answers, $75 apiece. Any singletons earn $150, but no bonuses will be awarded.
- Round ends after 10 questions are played.
ROUND TWO
- Same as Round One, except all dollar values are doubled.
- In this round, players will also vie for positioning in the Countdown Round, which will determine the champion.
COUNTDOWN ROUND
- The scores at the end of Round Two determine positioning for this round.
- This round plays the same as the other rounds, except that the players have the chance to answer as many parts as they can, so long as they provide correct answers! Therefore, a player can answer 1, 2, or all 3 parts.
- At the start of the round, the leader will get 4 points, second place 5 points, and third place 6 points. Tied players will get the LOWER available point value. Each correct answer deducts 1 point.
- Players MUST give answers ONE AT A TIME and WAIT until I acknowledge one answer as right or wrong before proceeding. Failure to follow this rule will disqualify you from the question, even if you give right answers. EXCEPTION: If a player indicates that he or she doesn't know, or runs out of time, the next player in line may give an answer.
- There are no "two-choice" questions in this round. A part cannot close on a wrong answer.
- The first player to bring his or her score to 0 becomes the champion and earns an extra $1,000! Runners-up keep their cash.
BONUS ROUND
- This is a new bonus round not seen on any version of the show, and it's more germane to the show's format.
- The champ starts by selecting one of five keys, which each go to one of five cars.
- The champ can then "eliminate" up to three of the cars that DON'T go with the key by answering three 3-part questions perfectly. To help the player, all the questions use the same three answers, and each answer will only be used once. On the player's fourth win, one car is automatically eliminated and only two questions are asked.
- Once the "bad cars" are eliminated, the champ chooses one of the remaining cars. If the key starts the car, he or she keeps the car and "retires." If not, he or she gets a consolation prize, either a cash bonus or a trip, depending on how many games the champ has won. Oh, yeah...if a player wins five games in a row, he or she automatically wins a car of his or her choice!
OTHER RULES
- 24 hours to respond to a question.
- You may select which part to answer by saying A, B, or C, but you MUST give the letter with the answer, or you'll be asked to fix it.
- You are advised to provide as much info as you can when answering, especially with names.
- Incomplete, misspelled, or misunderstood answers will be handled on a case-by-case basis, but my decisions are final.
- Defeated players must wait one episode before trying again, but "retired" players must wait two episodes.
With all this in mind, who'd like to put themselves to the test?
