We're starting a new game of Lucky Numbers. Steve Anderson -- asja2002 -- returns with one win and $110,264. Now here's the question. Closest to the right answer high or low gets to play. Before the show, a production assistant from Lucky Numbers rolled five money dice. The numbers 1 through 6 were replaced with, respectively, a penny, a nickel, a dime, a quarter, a half dollar, and a dollar. What was the combined value of the roll? Please respond in dollars and cents and make your answer is higher than 4¢ and lower than $5.01Please PM dougmorrisontheair (that's me) in 24 hours from now.

And here's the roll. The dollar signs each represent $1.00 -- so that's a total of $2.00 -- add that to the half-dollar, the nickel, and the penny and you come up with... (ding) ...$2.56. Who's the closest? $2.55 superfan
It's Rick Morris -- no relation to me -- I swear -- especially when you consider he missed by a penny. Lucky Numbers coming up in a bit.

KGO - SAN FRANCISCO/OAKLAND/SAN JOSE' Staff announcer: What went wrong in the 1990 Fall Classic? Another A's throwback -- tonight at six. (opening theme plays)Bill Kennedy: It's time to play -- Lucky Numbers. Ladies and gentlemen -- Doug Morris. (audience cheers) Thank you, Bill Kennedy and helloooooo, everybody. Welcome to Lucky Numbers. Our contestants test their luck with the numbers -- by rolling these unpredictable dice to uncover words, names, and common expressions. The sooner they can identify them correctly, the more money they will win. At the end of the game, the winning contestant rolls for lots of cash and amazing prizes in our main event. (audience cheers)Our streak of $100,000+ wins at the main event continues. But, ironically, no one's won all three medals as yet. As a result, the jackpot is really climbing. Will this be the day? Let's make welcome our players. Playing red, our challenger, Rick Morris. And playing blue, the champion, Steve Anderson, with $110,264. (audience cheers)Rick, warmest of welcomes to the dice table. We have verified we're not related. Please tell us about yourself.

I'm from Spokane, Washington, where I'm a school bus attendant, working with special needs kids. In my spare time, I love to travel and watch pro wrestling.

Oh, that's gotta be rewarding work with the special needs kids. Good luck to you today. And Steve, good luck to you as you defend your crown for the first time. Rest to test your luck with the numbers -- and the letters?

Okay, if everyone's ready to play, let's play. We've got a big jackpot at stake in the main event. It's gathered nearly a quarter of a million dollars in cash ... (audience cheers)...and a lot of dust. (audience laughs)So without further adieu... ...Rick, you're challenging. You'll start us shortly after we load in this puzzle. (chime sfx)We've got twelve lucky numbers up there. Behind the numbers is the identity of a person, place, thing, or other common expression. While the numbers are in no particular order, the letters that are behind the numbers are always in their correct spots. The sooner you can solve, the more money you can win. Each puzzle's starting value in this first round is $1500. We take away $100 for each letter revealed. Rick, please be our guest -- and roll away. (audience cheers as...) (Rick rolls)And you're starting with a 3. Rick, in this game, you may select the 3 -- or select numbers that total 3. How do you play it?

I'll start with 1 & 2

Post by dougmorrisontheair on Aug 30, 2024 23:19:10 GMT -5
(ding)A 1 and a 2 give us a T and a N. Rick, you may take a guess for $1300, roll the dice again, or pass the dice to Steve. A roll of a 2 is unlucky and cannot be played. Anytime you make any mistake on Lucky Numbers -- whether it's a roll or a wrong guess -- you lose control of the game, your opponent takes command, and we reveal the letter behind the highest remaining number.

(ASB win cue plays; audience applause) Woah! One roll, one guess, and 13 bills in your bank. Rick, as you know, banked money is yours to keep no matter how the game ends. (chimes; audience cheers) And that sound in the main game means a chance at a follow-up question. We've got three follow-up questions in the game of increasing value. This question is worth $500. Rick, since you solved this puzzle, you'll answer the question first. If you answer it correctly, you'll bank another $500. If you miss, Steve will have a chance to capitalize. So, Rick, for $500... Randy Jackson, the current bandleader on "Name That Tune", was briefly a member of which of these rock bands? Is it Aerosmith, Foreigner, or Journey?

I'm going to guess Journey.

Journey is right. (audience cheers)Randy was a session musician for their album "Raised on Radio"; he joined the band for the tour that followed. Rick with a quick $1800. Steve, there should be oodles of time to catch up. And we'll play the rest of Round 1 -- when you come back to the dice table. (commercial cue plays; audience applauds)

(HR87 theme plays) A source for many of the puzzles and questions we use on Lucky Numbers is the 22-volume World Book Encyclopedia -- which includes the index volume and research guide. Our players always receive great welcoming gifts. Here's Bill with two of them. (scattered laughter from crew) Bill: Oh they're great. A weekend stay for two at the Marriott Newport Beach resort hotel, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Champagne dinners at any of four restaurants, elegance, and hospitality, the Newport Beach Marriott.
And -- Kellogg's Pokémon Pop-Tarts. Kellogg's says good morning with delicious pastries topped in yellow Pikachu frosting. K-E-double-L -- oh - double good. Catch Pokémon Pop-Tarts from Kellogg. Bill: We'll be back with more of Lucky Numbers -- after this message.

(ASB cue plays; audience applauds) And we're back on Lucky Numbers. Rick, our challenger, experienced beginner's luck with one roll, one solve, and one question. Challenger leads with $1800. Steve's yet to bat. Steve will bat as we load in a new puzzle. (chime sfx)And there it is. Give 'em a roll. (audience cheers as...) (Steve rolls)And you're starting with a 7, Steve.

(audience cheers as...) (Steve rolls)And you get a 5 this time. Looks like the only way to play this roll is by taking the 1 and 4. Is that correct, folks? (ding)About 17 officials from network and the show say "yes". So as a result, we get a T and an O. Steve, danger zone's widening. Rolls of 2, 4, and 5 are now unlucky. Take a guess for $1100, roll again, or pass the dice?

Passing to Rick. All right. Let's see what happens. (audience cheers as...) (Rick rolls) (audience groans) (buzz)And a 5. Steve, the hunch worked. This means we reveal the highest remaining number of 12. (ding)It's another E. Steve, rolls of 2, 4, and 5 remain unlucky. Take a guess for $1000, roll again, or pass the dice again?
