We're starting a new game of Lucky Numbers. pathfinder20 returns with one game and $80,075 in cash and merchandise. We're seeking Kourtney's next opponent. Since this host was away for several weeks last year and we have a new champion, I'm going to relax the waiting period a bit. If you played in the main game of Episode 28 or 29, please sit on your hands and let someone else in on the fun. With that, let's play the qualifying question. The player closest to the right answer, high or low, gets to play against Kourtney. Before the show, we shuffled a deck of 52 playing cards and drew the first five cards from the top of the deck. What was the combined value of the five cards? Any face card is valued at 10, any ace is valued as 1, otherwise the value is the number on the card. Please make sure your answer is higher than 5 and lower than 51.Please PM dougmorrisontheair (that's me) in 24 hours from now.

Okay, let's see the cards. (ding)Starting off with a Queen of Clubs. (ding)Following up with a 5 of Diamonds. (ding)Darn. Snowman busts us out. Wait -- wrong game. (ding)There's a 7 for 30. And the last card is... (ding)...another snowman to give us the correct answer of 38. Who's the closest? 41 fdriscoll22
Sharp shootin, Frank. Only off by 3. Lucky Numbers coming up in a bit.

Well Doug, I’m from El Cerrito, California, right by Berkeley. By day, I work as a customer service manager at a local supermarket. But by night, I’m a quizmaster for trivia night at a local pub.

Ah, we'll see if some of that trivia knowledge you ask others will come in handy today.
Good luck to you today, Frank.
And, Kourtney, good luck to you as well. A thrilling win yesterday. Ready to defend your crown?

Well Frank's rolling first since Frank's the challenger as we again wish good luck to all. Let's load in a puzzle, first. (chime sfx)Now we've got twelve lucky numbers up there. Behind the numbers is the identity of a person, place, thing, or other common expression. While the numbers are in no particular order, the letters that are behind the numbers are always in their correct spots. The sooner you can solve, the more money you can win. Each puzzle's starting value in this first round is $1500. We take away $100 for each letter revealed. Frank, since you're controlling the dice, you might as well roll 'em. So please roll those bones. (audience cheers as...) (Frank rolls)And you're starting with the roll of a 6. Frank, in this game, you may reveal the letter that's behind the 6 -- or you may take more than one number that totals 6. How do you play it?

Can I do 1, 2 and 3?

(ding)You just did -- and you get an A, an F and an S. Frank, rolls of 2 and 3 are considered unlucky and cannot be played. Anytime you make a mistake -- with an unlucky roll or with an incorrect guess of the puzzle -- you lose control of the dice. Your opponent then gets a free letter courtesy of the highest remaining number on the board. So, Frank, with that, you may guess for $1200, roll again, or pass the dice to Kourtney.

(ding)And an H is added to the proceedings. Frank, rolls of 2 and 3 remain unlucky. Guess for $1100, roll again, or pass the dice to Kourtney?

(audience cheers as...) (Frank rolls) And it's a 6 this time. And it looks like -- yes -- the only way to play this is the 6. (ding)We get an O and, Frank, rolls of 6, 3 and 2 are now unlucky. Guess for $1000, roll again, or pass the dice to Kourtney?

(ding)T and a W appear now. Frank, the danger zone's widened so much, the rolls that work are analogous to the lucky numbers that remain on the board. So you'll have to roll one of those combinations to stay in business. You may guess for $800, roll again, or pass to Kourtney.

Okay, Kourtney, welcome to the game. Let's see if you can match one of those lucky numbers. (audience cheers as...) (Kourtney rolls)(more cheers) You can! Only way you can play this is the 11. (ding)It's an H. Kourtney, again, the only rolls that work are the numbers you see. You may guess for $700, roll again, or pass back to Frank.

(ASB win cue plays; audience applause) That's it. Frank, I would've done the same thing -- passed when the lucky rolls were getting scarce. But Kourtney got a lucky roll -- (chimes; audience cheers) -- and with the chimes after the solve, Kourtney, you have a chance at a follow-up question. As you know, we attach three follow-up questions of increasing value to our puzzles. This first one's worth $500. Kourtney, if you answer correctly, you bank the further $500. If you miss, Frank has a chance to narrow the score. So, Kourtney, for $500 more... Rihanna performed at the halftime show of pro football's most recent championship game. Was Rihanna born in Barbados, Jamaica, or the British Virgin Islands?

(ASB win cue plays; audience applause) And welcome back to Lucky Numbers. Let's check the scores to make sure they didn't change. They didn't. (scattered laughter from crowd) Kourtney still leads $1200 to nothing. Frank, you have a chance to catch up. Since you're trailing, you'll be up first with this puzzle. (chime sfx)And we've got an ampersand in this puzzle. Keep that in mind as you play. Roll 'em, please, Frank. (audience cheers as...) (Frank rolls)Well, started the game off with the roll of a 6 -- and you're starting this puzzle with the roll of a 6. How do you play it?
