After an admittedly long hiatus, Lucky Numbers is back in business.
Sam Ryan returns with one win and $83,505 in cash and merchandise.
Slight rule change: A match will last anywhere between 15 to 20 rounds. After the 15th round, if someone's roll of the dice results in the win of a pot, the tacky buzzer will sound. The player who has more money in the bank will win the match and play The Main Event -- currently worth a $110,000 cash jackpot plus three great prizes.
As we invite Sam to hop on board, who wants to challenge him (anyone who hasn't lost to Sam in LN is eligible)?

Checking out merchandise at the store. But today, he wants to check out the prizes we have in the main event. I hope you both win a lot of money today. Only one of you will go to the main event. Let's start finding out who. Take a look at the game board, please, Matt and Sam. Those are the lucky numbers in play for every game in our match -- 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. Attached to five of those numbers are cash awards. Anytime your dice roll totals one of those lucky numbers, you seize control of that cash award. However, the remaining number is the luckiest of them all. It's our winning point. And the winning point in the first game we're about to play is... (drum beats; cha-ching)...the number 10. Roll a 10 in any combination and you'll win the cash you've seized *plus* the money in the pot. At the start of every game, we seed the pot with $1500 -- just as we have right now -- and it could go up by as much as $500 on a particular roll. More on that later. But in every game of Lucky Numbers, rolling a 7 is not lucky. Any roll of 7 does this. (danger zone cue; lights briefly flicker in certain parts of studio)The game then goes into the danger zone. The complexion of the game will change from there. More about *that* later. Now -- to get control of the dice, you must correctly answer a toss-up question. If you anticipate and you're wrong, the roll automatically goes to your opponent. So -- Sam, Matt, hands on the buzzers, please -- because here comes your first question. Jenny Jones, Ricki Lake or Oprah Winfrey. In an memorable episode of her talk show, who gave a car to each member of her audience? 23 slrcatchphrase 64 mringgenberg 55 random.org (Matt buzzes in) Matt?

That's it. Oprah. (audience applause) Matt, here are the dice. Roll a 10 and you'll instantly win this first game and $1500. (Matt rolls) (danger zone cue; lights flicker in studio)Oh -- bad roll to start off. Gentlemen, we're quickly in the danger zone. The next roll of 7 will mean instant victory -- for your opponent. So if you have a feeling another roll of 7 is coming up, you may pass the dice. Next question. Australia, Canada or the U.S. Actor Ryan Reynolds is a native of what nation? 56 slrcatchphrase 97 mringgenberg 92 random.org (Matt buzzes in) Matt?

Ryan Reynolds is originally from Vancouver, British Columbia. He's Canadian all right. (audience applause)Matt, you got us in this mess -- but you could get us out of it. We're in the danger zone -- so any roll of 7 loses the game. But any 10 wins it. Would you like to roll the dice -- or pass them to Sam? (audience shouts suggestions)

He's going to try to win it here. (scattered cheers) Double fives or a 6 and 4 make you $1500 richer. (Matt rolls) (chimes; audience cheers) Not a lucky roll -- but a wild roll. Any combination of 2, 3, 11 or 12 means we put another $500 in the pot. (drum beats; cha-ching) There it is. Pot goes up to $2000. And with the wild roll, Matt, you get to roll again. (Matt rolls) (buzz) (audience groans) Ohhhh -- and another bad roll gives Sam $2000 and the game. (ASB win cue plays; audience applause) Well -- Sam -- this is probably the easiest $2000 you've ever won. You've yet to touch the dice and you're already two grand to the good. Matt, plenty of time to catch up. We play as many games as time will allow. The player who's banked more money when time is called wins the match -- and then goes on to the main event for more than $100,000 in cash and prizes. (audience cheers) Okay, we've got a clear board and pot. Let's seed the pot with a new one and a half grand. (drum beats; cha-ching)And in the process, we've randomly selected 9 as the luckiest number on the board. Roll a 9 in any combination and you win the 1500 -- perhaps more. We're out of danger with a new game. So the winner of the next question gets to roll automatically. True or false: The 1900 Summer Olympics were held in Vienna. 34 slrcatchphrase 97 mringgenberg 30 random.org (Sam buzzes in) Sam?

They were held in Paris. (scattered cheers) Sam, your first chance in the match to roll comes now. (Sam rolls) Just missed the lucky number of 9. Got a 10 instead for... (ding) ...$500. Anytime Sam seizes control of a lucky number, the amount attached to it lights up red. Matt, in your case, lucky numbers you seize control off become blue. On to our next question. "Hot Shots! II: The Sequel" or "Hot Shots! Part Deux". Which is the actual title for the second "Hot Shots!" movie? 30 slrcatchphrase 36 mringgenberg 29 random.org (Sam buzzes in) Sam?

(HR87 theme plays) A source for many of the questions we use on Lucky Numbers is the 22-volume World Book Encyclopedia -- including the research guide and index volume. No matter how this match ends, today's players are receiving some fine gifts. Bill, please tell us about one of 'em. Bill: It's the Lonestar Singelodeon. Whether you sing, rap or shout, the Lonestar Singelodeon turns you into a one-man recording studio. Now you can sing along with your favorite hits from Lonestar. Bill: We'll be back with more of Lucky Numbers -- after this message.

(ASB cue plays; audience applauds) Annnnd we're back with more of Lucky Numbers. As you can see by the scoreboard, Bill's had a lot of good luck with $5500. Matt, there's plenty of time for a comeback. Remember, we play as many games as time will allow. So if he can hit some winning numbers immediately, so can you. In fact, let's go ahead and determine a new winning point for a new game. The luckiest number of all for the fourth game we're about to start is... (drum beats; cha-ching)...a 5. Roll a 1 and 4 -- or a 3 and 2 -- and you'll pocket at least $1500. On to our next question. Ann Curless, Ann Wilson or Ann Taylor. Which Ann was, and still is, a member of the group Exposé? 67 slrcatchphrase 78 mringgenberg 18 random.org (Sam buzzes in) Sam?

Oh no. Ann Wilson's part of Heart. Ann Curless is in Exposé. I had a case of the smittens for Ann Curless -- and I don't think I'm over it after all these years. Matt, this is a break for you. Roll those dice. (Matt rolls) Got a 9. That means you have control of... (ding)...$375. That and the pot will go to you if you win this game. Next question. Memphis's NBA team, Toronto's NBA team or Utah's NBA team. Which one does not have a double Z in the team's name? 78 slrcatchphrase 58 mringgenberg 91 random.org (Sam buzzes in) Sam?

Good guess. You're right. (audience cheers) Toronto's team is known as the Raptors; no Z at all in that team name. Memphis' team name is still the Grizzlies after their relocation from Vancouver, B.C. Utah's still the Jazz long after they left New Orleans Roll 'em again, Sam. (Sam rolls) Almost sounded like something from a movie. Ada from Decatur gives Sam... (ding)...$300. That and the pot will go to Sam if he wins. Matt's playing for a little more. Let's see if we get a winner on this next query. True or false: Walter Cronkite's grandson voiced Dennis the Menace in an animated production. 55 slrcatchphrase 82 mringgenberg 97 random.org (Matt buzzes in) Matt?

'Fraid it's true. Peter Cronkite voiced Dennis in 2002's "Dennis the Menace: Cruise Control", an animated made-for-TV movie. Peter later followed in Walter's footsteps and went into print journalism during his college days. Sam, please roll the bones. (Sam rolls)(scattered groan) Close. Just fell into a total of 4 -- worth... (ding)...$500. We're not in danger at the present time -- so we move on to this. True or false: President John F. Kennedy was born in the 1900s. 32 slrcatchphrase 64 mringgenberg 11 random.org (Sam buzzes in) Sam?
