ME: No, sorry. Jill Stein was never a professional politician. Her colleague was BARBARA BOXER. James and Lenny score $150 each (Applause). Kevin has $775, James has $1,150, and Lenny leads with $1,375 as we go into a question on WORDPLAY. Listen carefully to this one.
I'll describe 3 common two-word phrases that have the initials "E.E." Pick one and tell me what I am referring to. Look at the screen.
A. Quick escape route. B. Uses minimal power. C. Mechanical science expert.
(BONG! BONG! BONG!)
ORDER: Lenny, Kevin, James.
ME: Lenny, start us off.

ME: Hmmmmmm...no, sorry, I cannot take that answer. The clue said "Quick Escape Route." A "route" is a thing, not an action. The answer I had in mind was EMERGENCY EXIT. Clue C, by the way, was ELECTRICAL ENGINEER. Kevin was the only one to score that time (Applause). And the game gets much closer as we check the scores.
KEVIN: $1,075 JAMES: $1,150 LENNY: $1,375
ME: Let's try a question on SONG LYRICS.
In 1976, Paul Simon had his only #1 pop hit as a solo act with the song "Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover." The song's chorus lists a few ways to do so, featuring words that rhyme with men's names. I'll provide 3 lines from the song's chorus, each with 2 words removed. Pick a line and provide the missing rhyming words. Look at the screen.
A. Slip out the _____, _____. B. Make a new _____, _____. C. No need to be _____, _____.
(BONG! BONG! BONG!)
ORDER: Lenny, James, Kevin.
ME: Lenny?

ME: "Just listen to me." That's right for all three - $100 each (Applause). Next question is on SPORTS.
In horse racing, nothing is more prestigious than winning the Triple Crown. I'll show you the 3 races of the Triple Crown. Pick one and tell me the city AND state where it takes place. CAUTION: You must give me both parts. Look at the screen.
A. Kentucky Derby B. Preakness C. Belmont Stakes
(BONG! BONG! BONG!)
ORDER: Lenny, Kevin, James.
ME: Lenny, go first.

ME: Thank you. All three are right for $100 (Applause). One more question, and it's on LITERATURE.
The Bronte sisters - Charlotte, Anne, and Emily - are the most recognized sisters in literary history. I'll name 3 novels. Pick one and tell me if it was written by CHARLOTTE, EMILY, or ANNE Bronte. Look at the screen.
A. "Wuthering Heights" B. "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" C. "Jane Eyre"
(BONG! BONG! BONG!)
ORDER: James, Kevin, Lenny.
ME: James, go for it!

ME: All of you are well-read. Another $100 for each of you (Applause).
(CLANGCLANGCLANGCLANGCLANG!)
(Theme starts up)
ME: Take another breather, gentlemen. That's the end of Round Two. Let's check the scores going in to the Countdown Round.
KEVIN: $1,375 JAMES: $1,450 LENNY: $1,675
ME: Close game so far, but anything can happen in the unpredictable Countdown Round, which we'll play when we return. First, though, here's a question for our home viewers.
We learned that Sri Lanka was once called Ceylon. Prior to that, the Persians referred to it by another name. That name led to the creation of an English word meaning "good fortune." What was the Persian name for Sri Lanka?
ME: Find out the answer, and find out who our champ will be, right after this!

(Theme plays as the camera shows me at the contestants' desk, chatting with them)
BRIAN: Welcome back! Did you know the answer to our play-along question: What did the Persians call Sri Lanka, which led to the creation of an English word? It's Serendip, which led to the word "serendipity," named for a Persian fairy tale in which the princes of Serendip experience unexpected good fortune...much like "Split Second" contestants (Laughter).
(Cut to an art card plugging the accommodations)
BRIAN: While in Toronto, out-of-town guests and staff stay at the Radisson Admiral Hotel - Harbourfront. Located in the Entertainment District just 5 minutes from the CN Tower and Rogers Centre, this hotel offers bright and airy rooms in a modern property featuring a heated outdoor pool and fine dining restaurant.
(Shot of me back at my podium)
BRIAN: Now, let's return to our host and contestants and play the Countdown Round!
ME: Thank you, Brian! Welcome back to this very close game - only $300 separating third and first places, but that's irrelevant for now. This round, the Countdown Round, will determine who goes on to play for the car. Players, we will play this round like before, but with one exception: this time, when you buzz in, you may provide one, two, or all three answers, so long as you give correct answers and WAIT for me to acknowledge them (players, you DON'T need to wait for me if someone says "I don't know" or "I pass" - only wait if a player gives a right or wrong answer). You will count down one point for every right answer, and the first player to count down to 0 wins the game, an extra $1,000 cash, and a chance at the cars. Let's determine your starting scores.
KEVIN: 6 JAMES: 5 LENNY: 4
ME: Kevin, since you were in third going into this round, you'll start with 6 points. James, you were second, so you'll start with 5 points. Lenny, as the leader, you'll start with 4 points. Remember, gentlemen, you MUST WAIT for me to acknowledge a right or wrong answer (but not a pass), and give answers one at a time, or you'll forfeit your turn. Let's begin the Countdown Round...now!
(Countdown Round cue begins)
ME: First question is on POP MUSIC.
In the world of pop music, a "hot" artist's "hot" hits might actually be cold. I'll name 3 singers or groups, and you tell me their most famous song that contains the word "cold" in the title. Look at the screen.
A. Paula Abdul B. Rolling Stones C. Foreigner
(BONG! BONG! BONG!)
ORDER: Kevin, James, Lenny.
ME: Kevin, go for it.

ME: And that's the most you can sing without having to pay royalties (Laughter). James counts down to 3, Lenny stays at 4, and Kevin counts down to 5 (Applause). James can go out on the next question, which will come later today.
