(BONG! [87] James' light shines)
ME: James?
JAMES: Tom Hanks!
ME: He's the one! (Audience applauds as James pumps his fist) You're back in the lead with that fine, fine answer. 65 for you, 60 for Sheldon, 35 for Matt. James, you're in control - stick or switch, buddy?
(James picks up the remote...)

ME: Going on for 20 points...
In 1986, the 6'8" Chevy Chase made the 5'2" Paul Simon look shorter than he already was by performing alongside him in the memorable music video for what African-inspired song?

(BONG! [64] Sheldon's light shines)
ME: Sheldon?
SHELDON: No doubt in my mind that this is "You Can Call Me Al"!
ME: No room for doubt on that one! He's right! (Applause as Steve plays a few bars of the backing track for "You Can Call Me Al" on his keyboard) Back-and-forth battle between James and Sheldon going on. Sheldon, you're leading now with 80. What's your next move?

(Sheldon presses button 7) ME: And behind Channel Seven... ME: ...we have PUBLIC TELEVISION! (Steve plays a few bars of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" as the audience goes "ooooh") Yes, THIS channel! We know that only about 3% of Americans actually watch public television, so we're going to give you that kind of chance of getting this tough academic trivia question correct. This is a one-time channel and everyone can play. For 20 points... In which epoch of geological time are we currently living?

(Nobody moves..."Double Dare" BUZZ!-BUZZ!)
ME: Time's up! What, you guys didn't learn about the HOLOCENE EPOCH? (Audience awwwws as Steve plays a downward scale). Anyway, scores stay where they are. Sheldon, you're in control. Any channel except 1 or 7, please.

Sorry, that was a one-time channel and is now closed. Pick again.
(For all players, please consult the image of the TV screen. Anything in white means it hasn't been picked. Anything in pink has been picked, but it's still open. Anything in grey has been closed.)

How about five, then?

Post by jmdarrall on Feb 24, 2016 21:32:43 GMT -5
(Sheldon presses button 5) ME: Behind Channel Five we have... ME: ...REALLY BAD TV! (Audience laughs and applauds as Steve plays "Bad to the Bone") We could be like most other pop culture game shows and focus on great TV shows of the past and present, but we're different here at "Remote Control." We're not afraid to ask questions about the stinkbombs that have polluted our airwaves (Laughter). For 10 points... Sure, he's great in the kitchen, but in 2001, he cooked up a real turdburger by starring in a poorly-received NBC sitcom. When it came to his acting skills, I guess he couldn't "kick it up a notch." Name this TV chef and restaurateur.

(BONG! [39] Matt's light shines)
ME: Matt?
MATT: Emeril Lagasse.
ME: BAM! That's who we were looking for! (Steve plays the fanfare as the crowd applauds) You're up to 45, but you're still trailing. You're in control now, so do you want to stick or switch? Remember, 1 and 7 are closed.

Got the right idea, as this will help you catch up. For 20 points on REALLY BAD TV...
Wait, Steven Bochco actually produced a flop?! Stranger things have happened, but for Bochco, nothing was stranger than this 1990 outing, which combined serious police drama with corny song-and-dance numbers. This series was so awful that Peg Bundy, on an episode of "Married...with Children," threatened to make a misbehaving Bud watch it if he didn't settle down. Name this series that made viewers cringe.

(BONG! [6] Sheldon's light shines)
ME: Sheldon?
SHELDON: I get nightmares just thinking about it (he shudders)..."Cop Rock"!
ME: That's the show! (Audience applauds as Steve fanfares). I can't believe you knew that! You have 100 points now, James has 65, and Matt has 45. Sheldon, are we sticking, or are we switching?

Sadly, I know that because my sister and mother are having a marathon of Gilmore Girls and it's a reference that has happened more than once, but I digress. Let's end this channel. (presses button on remote)

ME: Nicely done, sir. Spouting random pop culture references surely helps. In any event, gonna close out REALLY BAD TV. For 30 points...
The 1962 panel show "You're In The Picture" will go down as one of the worst game shows in TV history, having the dubious distinction of being one of few shows to be cancelled after just one episode...ouch! Possibly in a desperate move to save his career, the show's host went on TV the following week to apologize for subjecting American eyeballs to this suckfest. Name the comedian who proved that you can't be "The Great One" all the time.

ME: James?
JAMES: Jackie Gleason.
ME: He's the man we needed! (Applause as Steve plays the fanfare) Nicely done! The scores have Sheldon at 100, Matt at 45, and James at 95. James, you have control. Where are we going now? You may choose any channel except 1, 5, or 7. Remember, you can return to a previously-opened channel.

(James presses button 2 on his remote, screen switches to MUSIC VIDEOS)
ME: We're going to close out that channel now. For 30 points...
Which Oscar-winning actor supplemented his income by dancing through an empty hotel lobby in Fatboy Slim's 2001 music video for "Weapon of Choice"?

ME: James again?
JAMES: Christopher Walken.
ME: Right again! (Applause as Steve plays the hook to "Weapon of Choice" on his keyboard) You're back in the lead again, with 125! Let's select another channel, please, James. Remember, 9 has been played, but it's still open. 3, 4, 6, and 8 have not been touched yet. Choose wisely.

Post by jmdarrall on Feb 28, 2016 22:47:27 GMT -5
(James presses button 3 on his remote) ME: Behind Channel Three... ME: Oh, yeah! It's DR. BLISTER time! (Audience and contestants applaud as Steve plays a few bars of "Rumour Has It." Meanwhile, a naughty-nurse type lady with jet-black hair and glasses pushes out a wheelchair with Dr. Blister, an aged gentleman with a stern face, beret, salt-and-pepper facial hair, and tweed suit.) Yo! What's up, Dr. B! (Dr. Blister gives me a look as if to say "who the h*ll are you and what did you just say?" Everyone laughs.) ME: Never mind. Anyway, Dr. Blister is a renowned authority on pop culture rumors and urban legends. Is that true, Doctor? DR. BLISTER (in a German accent): Ja vol! I am here to share mein expertise vith these people. ME: Indeed. When he finishes talking about a story he's gathered over the years, I'll simply ask you to identify the person, place, or thing that he has described. Ready? I hope so. For 10 points...take it away, Dr. Blister! DR. BLISTER: Remember zat show "The Wonder Years"? Remember Kevin Arnold's dorky buddy, Paul? Vell, according to urban legend, ze actor who played Paul, Josh Saviano, grew up to become...mein gott! Ein shock rocker! Vether it's true or not, I vill say he is not one of "Ze Beautiful People."
ME: Josh Saviano allegedly grew up to become what "shock rock" icon?

(The contestants think for a moment...BONG! James' light shines)

ME: That's correct! (Applause as Steve plays a fanfare) You're still leading with 135. Want to stick with Dr. Blister, or switch?

ME: Sticking with the good doctor. For 20 points...Dr. Blister, take it away!
DR. BLISTER: Ze commercials for Life Cereal vith ze kid, Mikey. Remember him? Rumor has it zat he vent kaput vhen he combined a fruity candy vith cola und it made his stomach blow up like ze Hindenberg!
ME: Allegedly, what type of candy, when combined with cola, made Mikey's tum-tum explode?

(BONG! [68] Sheldon's light shines) ME: And, that's Sheldon! SHELDON (with a confused look on his face): Pop Rocks? ME: That's the candy! (Sheldon breathes a sigh of relief as Steve plays a fanfare) Don't you know the old urban myth about Pop Rocks and cola making your stomach explode? Yeah, the "Mythbusters" proved that that was a bunch of hooey. DR. BLISTER: Ach! Zose "Mythbusters" are ze bane of mein existence! (The naughty nurse gives Dr. B a smack upside the head, and he calms down, until....) ( Air raid sirens sound and many of the stage lights go dark. The TV now says....) OFF THE AIRDR. BLISTER: Vat is zat? Ze Luftwaffe? Get me out of here! (The nurse complies and wheels him out) ME: Good news for Dr. Blister: it's not the Luftwaffe. Bad news for one of you: the TV is now OFF THE AIR (Steve begins playing a drum backing track while I calculate the scores. After a little while, he plays a certain 1969 melody by Steam...)! That means I've gotta kick out the player with the lowest score! Let's recap... SHELDON: 120 points MATT: 45 points JAMES: 135 points
ME: It looks like MATT...sorry, man! You did good, but not good enough! (Matt puts down his remote and lockout, looking nervous as he does so) At least you leave us with this song! AUDIENCE (singing along to the melody as Steve plays): NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA, HEY-HEY-HEY, GOOD-BYYYYYYE! NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA, HEY-HEY-HEY, GOOD-BYYYYYYE! NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA, HEY-HEY-HEY, GOOD-BYYYYYYE! (As the audience sings, Matt and his chair are yanked backwards through the wall, which is now made of papier-mache breakaway bricks. When the chair stops, two stagehands dressed in weird costumes torment him as a black curtain lowers. Finally, the audience settles down...) ME: 'Tis a shame that we got rid of him. Anyway, gentlemen, two of you have survived...for now...get ready to play THIS, THAT, OR THE OTHER!

ME: This is the round that will decide who is going to the Wheel of Jeopardy. I've got 12 questions, you should give me 12 answers. Only the FIRST player to ring in will get a crack at each question. Right answer, I give 10 points. Wrong answer, I take 10 points. Basically, right answer, good; wrong answer, bad. Sheldon, you are trailing by 15 points, so you're still very much in this.
The category for today's This, That, Or The Other is BIRTHPLACES. I'll name a celebrity, and you tell me if he or she was born in...
THE U.S.A. CANADA SOMEWHERE ELSE
Those are your three answers. Here are your questions...
1. Bruce Springsteen 2. Alex Trebek 3. Pamela Anderson 4. Nicole Kidman 5. Pierce Brosnan 6. Kathy Ireland 7. Victoria Principal 8. Kathy Lee Gifford 9. Alan Thicke 10. Robin Thicke 11. Amy Adams 12. Mel Gibson
(Sheldon and James, please submit an answer and buzz code for each item. Remember to use one of the three answers listed. Since penalties are involved, you may post PASS for any of the items you don't know. Good luck!)
