With the debut episode currently on hold, this is a good time to test drive the consolation game I've devised.
A consolation game will be played by one or both runners-up of a main game after the championship round but just before Top Card Plus -- depending on circumstances.
The first consolation game requires two players.
Who's in?

(audience cheers) Welcome back to Top Card. Before we give Toni a chance to play Top Card plus, we're going to give Kourtney and Shederick a chance to win some cash in our consolation game. It's a game we call Victory Lane. On our special track, we have a spade, heart, club, and diamond at the start. In a moment, Jackie will draw cards from the top one at a time. If she draw an ace or face card, the corresponding suit will move forward one space. But if draws a number card, the corresponding suit will move forward that many spaces. In other words, if she draws the 8 of spades, the spade on the track advances eight spaces. For a 5 of clubs, the club on the track advances five spaces. The first suit to reach victory lane, the last checkered space on the track, *by exact count* wins the race -- and the event ends immediately. Potential overshooting means the suit on the board doesn't move. When the race ends, the player who picks the winning suit wins $2000 cash. If the suit is in second place at that moment, the payoff is $750; third $500; fourth $250. Kourtney, because you were eliminate in our championship round, you'll pick first. Which suit would you like. Spade, heart, club, or diamond?

(ding)Diamonds for you, Kourtney. Shederick, of the remaining suits, which would you like?

(ding)Spades for Shederick. Good luck, everyone, and away we go. (final three minutes and few seconds of "The William Tell Overture" plays)I can name that tune in two notes. (scattered laughter from crowd) Jackie, let's have the top card, please. [NOTE FROM DOUG: Top Card has access to several decks of cards. The deck assigned to Round 1 of the suspended Episode 1 has been tucked away and will be brought back when the game resumes.](Jackie lifts top card) Starting with a 2 of diamonds. Good for Kourtney. Early lead for the diamond. Jackie, let's have what's now become the top card, please. (Jackie lifts top card) The 5 -- of spades. Shederick loves that. If the top card is the 9 of diamonds, Kourtney's suit's in victory lane. If the top card is the 6 of spades, Shederick's suit is in victory lane. Top card, please, Jackie. (Jackie lifts top card) New suit enters the fray -- 7 of hearts. Still early. Still anything can happen. Let's see what happens next with Jackie's top card. (Jackie lifts top card) Ace of clubs worth 1 space for the club. Well -- everything's on the board. But let's see if one of them will be in victory lane after this top card from Jackie. (Jackie lifts top card) Queen of spades. Face cards are worth one each in this game. That way, if we can't get movement on the number cards, we get movement courtesy of a face card or ace. Players, how are we feeling? [NOTE FROM DOUG: Again, Top Card has access to several decks of cards. The deck assigned to Round 1 of the suspended Episode 1 has been tucked away and will be brought back when the game resumes.]

Then let's resume the race with the top card from Jackie. (Jackie lifts top card) Three of hearts. That's for you, Van -- wherever you are. (scattered laughter from crowd) We've not seen any aces or face cards of heart as yet. If we do really soon, it'll be heartbreaker in the race. But anything can still happen. Let's see the top card from Jackie. (Jackie lifts top card) Four of diamonds. Diamond's catching up for Kourtney. Next top card now from Jackie. (Jackie lifts top card) Six of spades -- ohh -- no... (buzz)...one too many. Sorry, Shederick. Had the queen of spades not appeared earlier, you'd win. Spade has to stay where it is. But let's see if we get better news from Jackie. (Jackie lifts top card) Four of clubs. Well, that catches up. Club's been eating others' dust. And that happened. Let's see what happens here. (Jackie lifts top card) Six of hearts -- and -- (buzz) -- yeah -- heart's one away. Need an ace or face card. Let's see if happens here. (Jackie lifts top card) No, we get Penn and Teller's card. The 3 of clubs. Wow, has that club caught up? Let's see what's next. Top card, please, Jackie. (Jackie lifts top card) The *deuce* of clubs. Two more spaces. Heart and club are now on the brink of winning. Now how are we feeling, players?

Only one problem, 4 is already gone…so anything adding up to four would be nice.

That's why face cards are worth one in this game. With that, Jackie, let's continue the race with the top card. (Jackie lifts top card) (bells ring)(scattered groans) Speaking of face cards being worth one... ...that puts the heart in victory lane. If someone picked hearts, that would've paid $2000. Let's break it down further. The club finishes a close second; that would've awarded $750. Both players' picks, the spade and diamond, finished in a tie for third. Shederick and Kourtney, our rules say you're each walking out of here with $500. (audience cheers)

Thanks, all. We'll probably do another test later. Right now, the main game in Episode 1 is resuming.
