Welcome to Episode 60 of On A Roll. \ Bryan Law returns on Level 3 with $70,200 and no strikes \ We're back to the regular waiting list rules. So please consult DougMorris.net/oar before trying to qualify. \ We're seeking a challenger for Bryan. That could be you if you're the closest to the right answer to this qualifying question. Before the show, we shuffled a deck of 52 playing cards and drew the first five cards from the top of the deck. What was the combined value of the five cards? Any face card is valued at 10, any ace is valued as 1, otherwise the value is the number on the card. Please make sure your answer is higher than 5 and lower than 51.
Please PM dougmorrisontheair (that's me) your answer in 24 hours from now.

Okay, let's see the cards. What in tarnation? Uh, in any event, the 9 of spades starts us off. The 6 of diamonds follows for 15. The deuce of clubs bumps up the counter to 17. Is this your card? Your top card? Couldn't resist. We're up to 20. Last card. The 4 of hearts. Huh kay, about the cards, you'll find out more about these in the "Show Your Stuff" and "Coming Soon..." sections over the next few days -- and there's a good chance we'll do something soon in the workshop. As for this qualifying round. (ding)We've come to an answer of 24. Who's the closest? 23 bighornbattle Wouldn't it be funny if George locked in 21? Anyhoo, Top Ca-- er, uh, On A Roll, coming up in a bit.

Well, I am a singer from Spartanburg, SC. I also enjoy news music around the world, playing mahjong for 20 years, word searches, love game shows, and love 80s music. The Teen Titans are here with me. I enjoy helping them whenever they need me. Maybe either after the match or before the bonus round I can introduce them to you all. We even gave everyone here an autograph including in that autograph is my name and the Titans name before the show.

(audience cheers)I'm sure they appreciate that. Players, good luck. Let's begin the competition with a name game. (FF reveal sfx)We're starting with a famous person's last name -- and this is a two-word last name to clarify, Bryan and George. In a moment, I'll ask a question about this person -- and then three letters will randomly appear. The first player to signal and recognize the name will win four rolls of the dice. So, hands on the buzzers and away we go. Who got on a roll -- when he founded his eponymous rock band? (ding)
(Bryan and George, please PM me your buzz code from 1-100 and your answer.)

42 Bryan 37 bighornbattle 97 random.org(Bryan buzzes in)Bryan? Bryan: Van Halen. (dings; audience applause)That's it. One of my relatives worked at a guitar manufacturer. Early in his career, he was on a conference call with Eddie Van Halen. (scattered cheers) Jealous? Me? Nawwww. (scattered laughter from crowd) In any event, Bryan, please step into the box. Four rolls of the dice are yours. Before you roll, we need a game board. (FF reveal sfx; Lorelei poses by board)And there they are -- two-word clues at the top and the middle -- and a one-word clue at the bottom. Those three sets of clue words hidden by numbers. The clues lead to the identity of a person, place or thing. Bryan, you'll be rolling numbers and sums to uncover as many of the letters that make up the words as you can. The letters blocked by question marks stay blocked until you correctly solve a clue. When you're on a roll, please do not roll doubles. Anytime you roll doubles, you lose control of the dice to your opponent -- who picks up a free letter along the way. (Lorelei hands dice to Bryan) So, with the rules out of the way, Bryan, you -- are on a roll. (audience cheers as...) (Bryan rolls) (audience groans)(buzz)Well, drat. Square pair ends your turn -- quickly. Sorry about that. Players, please trade places. George, you're in the game all of a sudden. This means you're entitled to a free letter. Please select one number from any row.

(Puala touches screen)And it's -- an F. Oh dear. Try to take it personal, George. You may guess the top row or roll again. In this game, any wrong guess of a clue or a puzzle doesn't forfeit control of the dice. You're still on a roll.

(audience cheers as...) (George rolls)And your first roll is a 5 and a 4. George, in this game, when you roll two different numbers, you may play the 5 and 4 -- and you don't have to play them on the same roll -- or you may play the sum and take any 9.

9 on the top please.

(Puala touches screen)And it's an I. If it were another vowel, S&P would want a word with us. (scattered laughter from crew) George, you may guess the top clue or roll again.

(Puala touches screen)An I from the middle row... (Puala touches screen)...and an E from the bottom row. Well -- not sure how much help these vowels are, George. You may guess the middle row, guess the bottom row, or take the last roll in this round.

(Puala touches screen)Going the conventional route and taking a Y at the top row. George, we're out of rolls -- but you're still entitled to a guess of the top row's clue. A wrong guess or a pass here means we play another name game.

(dings; audience applause)That's it. Great job with few letters to play with. Now, George, this means you've earned the right to solve the puzzle. Do so correctly in the next few moments and you'll win the game plus pick up an extra hint in Big 6. If not, we'll play another name game.
