Exactly 40 years ago today, Reg Grundy's "Scrabble" starring Chuck Woolery aired its very first episode on the NBC Television Network.
During the mid 80s TV game shows on daytime major networks were still thriving.
I remember watching the very first broadcast and being so enamored by it that the third episode which aired on July 4th in the morning I stayed home for, skipping my hometown's annual Independence Day parade!
For your viewing pleasure, here is the very first episode:
The rules were a tad bit different in the early stages of the show. They soon began to streamline things a bit.
I personally liked the idea of the pot but would have reversed it.
Rather than putting money into a pot with each letter placed, I would start out each worth worth $X of dollars and with each letter placed, it would lower the pot amount.
Happy 40th birthday to Scrabble which had an over 5 year run on NBC from July 1984 until I believe March 1990.
It came back in January 1993 but it was so cheapened down and was gone just 6 months later for good.
