So, lately, I've been on an "The All New Jeopardy!" kick. Thanks go to the ITV version of J! in the UK which came and went in January of 2024.
The answer values in ITV's J! are £25, £50, £75, £100, and £150 -- *nearly* the same, numerically, to the scoring units here in the States in the brief '78 revival ($25, $50, $75, $100, $125). Of course, all the aforementioned stakes doubled in Double Jeopardy!
If you've had the chance to watch the ITV adaptation of J!, you've noticed it runs an hour -- but they don't use the J!/Double J!/Triple J!/Final J! format. A couple of podcasters in the U.K., who've seen ABC's "Celebrity Jeopardy!" noticed this as well.
The ITV adaptation played two rounds of J! followed by a Double J! and a Final J! to crown the day's champion. You may have also noticed the host, Stephen Fry, stretches after the revelation of nearly every correct question slowing down the game. Ad breaks (their turn for commercial breaks) in the U.K. are fewer and further between than "Celebrity Jeopardy!"
In a recent post at DougMorris.org, my blog, I recommended if ITV commissions another series (season, in our terms), they should use the J!/Double J!/Triple J!/Final J! format. Then, instead of having Stephen stretch, use that time to play -- Super Jeopardy!
From what I've been able to tell, ITV used just one giant monitor to display answers -- much like what Vanna uses currently on WoF. So, logistically, they can pull this off, I think. I also think they can put 25 categories on the board, hide an answer behind each one, mark it green for a correctly questioned answer or red for a "life lost" (our strike/incorrect response). If ITV's WoF is any indication, ITV's Super J! can be played for shopping sprees at UK businesses or "lovely holidays" (vacations, in our terms).
More of my J! '78 kick is being posted to The Green Room.
