Question for each of you this time. All about recent #1 draft picks. First, Nels, for $500:
Before being picked by the San Antonio Spurs with the first pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, Victor Wembanyama had been playing professionally since he was 15 years old in his home country. What is his home country?

Well, I didn't need the city, but you said "France", so that's correct.
*applause*
We'll go up in value, so next is Bill for Connor Bedard.
Connor Bedard was drafted first by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2023 NHL Draft from the Regina Pats, the oldest major junior hockey team that has continually operated since 1917. In what major junior hockey league does the Pats play?

Correct and you have another $1,000
Now back to you, George, and here's your question about Paul Skenes
Paul Skenes was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2023 MLB Draft. He became just the second player from his SEC school selected number one; the first since pitcher Ben McDonald was taken in the 1989 draft by the Orioles. For which school did they both compete?

So close to doubling the money, but a big chunk up for grabs. First, Nels:
A longtime Chicago Bears quarterback, retired in 1959, came to the AFL in 1960 and made it big with the Houston Oilers, winning MVP in 1961 and two championships. He manned the position for several Houston seasons then signed with the Oakland Raiders, eventually converting to placekicker and playing until he was 48 years old. Name him.

Now for George and Bill, buzzers ready, guys.
The WFL waged a battle for NFL defectors and free agents, scoring wide receiver Paul Warfield and running backs Jim Kiick and Larry Csonka, all formerly of the Miami Dolphins, and signed them to huge contracts. All three of them played for the same team in Memphis. What was the name of the team?

Bill! (Bill answers Grizzlies via PM) No, I'm afraid that's not right. George looks like he knows: it was Southmen. Nels: $3200 George: $5000 Bill: $2000 Back to you again, George, we have these categories left:
MASKED MEN THE WINTER OLYMPICS

Post by samthebravesfan on Dec 14, 2023 13:17:25 GMT -5
Good news for Bill: our judges say that "Grizzlies" is also acceptable because it was an informal nickname that stuck since people didn't like Southmen. So technically, both are correct and you'll also be awarded $1,500, which moves him into a tie with George. George still picks the next category, however.
Nels: $3200 George: $5000 Bill: $5000

*music strum*
He was a National League umpire for 30 years, retiring in 1992, and umpired in five World Series and seven All-Star Games and was elected by the Veterans Committee to the Hall of Fame in 2010. His most memorable moment came from being the plate umpire for Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit homer in the 1988 World Series. He was nicknamed "God" by some players due to his early graying hair and insistence on authoritative and accurate calls. Name him.

One for Nels, George and Bill with a playoff. Nels, for $1000: Due to the NHL lockout, most professionals were barred from playing in the Olympics. As a result, two countries failed to medal for the first time since 2006 in Turin. Both of these countries had placed combined in 17 of 24 prior Olympic hockey tournaments. Name the two countries.

You got one right: it's the USA and Canada. And now for a buzz-in between George and Bill: Innsbruck was actually an emergency host for the games, having previously held them in 1964. They were called to host them because the American city that was initially awarded the games refused due to voter rejection in a referendum. Name the city.

And that's the end of round one. George has the lead and we'll be right back right after this break. Don't go away!
*cheers and applause, fade out*
Okay, guys, I'm gonna level with you: I'm pretty sure I can't make this a current events sports trivia show like I wanted. It's not anyone's fault, just the format is a bit plodding. I've had an idea, though: I think something like a format to ESPN's 2-Minute Drill will work better for just general sports trivia. It should be a snappier format since it involves just one of you at a time and you guys can have expert categories and I'll REALLY try to stump you for that, which can be pretty fun. I'll try to think of the format and what would you guys say to being my first three contestants once I get that idea off the ground?
