Another fine pilot to look into. This time hosted by Jim Peck!

You won't believe this, but as I was in the middle of watching this pilot, my wife walked in and told me a joke relative to the four suits of playing cards!
I about fell off of my chair.
This was another very solid format to be sure.
I got to thinking the format of the questions might line up nicely for Split Decision toss-up questions too, but I am actually about to beta-test another toss-up method instead.

Kinda puzzling why this didn't sell. The Q&A material was creative. It had shades of the "Hot Potato" bonus round (which borrowed from the unsold "Decisions, Decisions"). The material got *more* creative when the field of three players was narrowed to two. The playing card design was, by necessity, creative as well. The talent -- sharp. If my math and recollection are right, this would've been the start of a comeback for Jim Peck if this show sold (it taped in 1990; a number of months prior, Martha Smith replaced him as the court reporter on "Divorce Court", back when it was a series of dramatized and scripted reenactments of cases). John Cramer was just starting to make a name for himself around this time -- he was the announcer on "The Byron Allen Show" (a rival to "The Arsenio Hall Show", which was partially the focus of the pilot's head-to-head championship round). As for the dealer, Lori Huggins (sp?; maybe Laurie?), she did a great job. I honestly never heard of her. If she had any other gigs, I don't remember them or they got lost in the shuffle of that era. The late '80s and early '90s were not necessarily kind to game shows. She was also on the U.S. "Countdown" pilot, also available for viewing on Wink's channel -- and she did well there, too. About the only problem I have is the apparently flat $5000 at stake in the bonus round. I'd go for a progressive jackpot that would start at $5000 and would increase at least $1000 for every show it would go unclaimed. I've always been of the belief game shows involving playing cards will have their moments of rotten luck. CS (all versions), "Gambit"/"Catch 21", even "Top Card" on the original version of The Nashville Network. Even if "Suit Yourself" sold and Lori dealt out some bad beats, this would still be a fun game.
Then again, even I do remind myself of this, the late '80s and early '90s were not necessarily kind to game shows.

"lost in the shuffle" Humor!
Indeed all game shows have an element of luck involved, even Jeopardy!, being lucky enough to get categories of your expertise, luck in finding the daily doubles, etc.

Sometimes I don't know my own punny strength, Bill. You've got to admit, I'm still such a card.

I have always enjoyed Jim Peck as a game show host. He was very underrated! He just had a run of bad luck with certain game shows like 3's A Crowd, which I did not like at all! Even if he did become the permanent host of Joker, the show had about run its course anyway.

The WoF/J! juggernaut was just gathering steam around the time of Jack Barry's planned retirement from hosting. So if there was an on-camera passing of the torch from Jack to Jim, TJW would've lasted probably about another three years -- as opposed to two under Uncle Bill.

Dan Enright must've thought someone as popular as Bill would save the show, but it wasn't the case. Another reason is most likely he was still employed by them right around the time Hot Potato was cancelled. Not that he was a bad host, but it seemed like an odd fit especially he had to move around a little more than usual. You know it had to make him a little uncomfortable.

Unless you're adjusting for inflation, maybe make the eggcrate numbers bigger. Otherwise, I think you're good.

I was thinking you could spot the players zeroes and then draws of cards would fill in the tens place, hundreds place and finally the thousands place for a four-digit cash prize.

Either that or $5 a point.

Another idea I had, take the sum total of the three cards (which would be anywhere from 6 up to 24) and pay $50 per point to the winners.
This would still make players want to try to keep higher ranked cards.
And for the Clubs Round maybe pay $125 per point.
