Announcement: for this summer I will be putting The Joker's Wild on hiatus, and moving the tournament to late September/early October of this year.
In it's place, I'll be showcasing a new show for my "Summer Solstice" called...
"Word You Like to Solve the Puzzle?". It's a very straightforward game where...you try to solve the puzzle.
A few things to note:
This will be part of my NGC Summer Block: A block of games airing from May 29, 2023...once my senior year will start to wind down, and will wrap sometime in September, just before The Joker's Wild hits it's second season on air.
This is going on ABC Primetime and gives players a chance to win over $25,000 just by guessing words.
I'm thinking of doing a "test run" of the show on March 13th. I would shoot for this week but I'm going to be super busy this week so I'll have to start later (check the vacation thread). This wouldn't necessary be billed as a pilot, but rather a special presentation. This is mostly just so I can know how to time out the show, as I want to try to end the test by the 31st before I leave for Japan (again...check vacation thread)
Before I get to the rules, I want thank Bill McDee once again. I asked him if I could use an element in his now defunct "Dice Words" and he said I could, so thanks a million Bill!
Now...the rules
This game uses elements from "Now You See It", Bill McDee's "Dice Words", and The Price is Right's "Grand Game".
2 teams of 2 players go back and forth trying to guess words by rolling dice.
Main Game
Before each round starts, the starting team decides which person’s going to be the “setter” and which one’s going to be the “guesser”. The setter chooses a number from 1 to 6, called “credits” with the catch being that the same number cannot be choses more than twice in one round.
ALTERNATE FORMAT: 2 players play this game, 1 against the other, and the setter is the opponent who isn’t controlling the puzzle. The setter chooses a number from 3 to 6 instead of 1 to 6. This will be used if getting 4 players each episode becomes a challenge.
The main game board consists of 15 spaces. A clue is read by the host, and the first letter is revealed in a six-letter word. The guesser can ask for another letter in the word, so long as they do not exceed the setter’s credit value. If they do exceed the set value, the team loses their turn.
A sound cue is used when there’s one letter left in the tossup puzzle, to which the player MUST take a guess. If the player can solve the puzzle, they win $200 for each letter called. If the player missolves, or uses too many letters, the word is revealed and they lose control.
The team who wins the tossup gets to play the main puzzle. The main puzzle is also always a six-letter word. The team rolls a pair of dice, one die has money values of $100, $250, $300, and $500, a strike, and a $750 side. The other die is a standard one through six die. Once the dice are rolled, the standard die reveals that letter in the puzzle, and the money die adds that value to the puzzle’s jackpot. Each team gets up to 2 rolls of the die to which they either have to take a guess or have to go back to the tossup puzzle. Again, a wrong guess loses control of the puzzle.
If a team manages to guess the 6 letter word, they win all of the money in the pot plus any money won in the tossups and the round is over.
Dollar values double at the start of the third round, and the leading player after that round would be declared the winner. The winner would go to the bonus round for the chance to win $25,000 in cash.
Bonus Round
The winning team plays in the big money bonus game to win up to $25,000.
Just like in The Price is Right’s “Grand Game”, the players start at only $2, and have to work their way up. That $2 is the players’ to keep, so they’ll at least win $2 whether they win or lose.
A 6 letter word is displayed to the team, and the setter for this round sets up to 20 credits this round, to which the guesser cannot exceed at any point throughout the game. A word is then shown to the guesser, a clue is read, and just like in the main game, the first letter is revealed and the player can call for another letter to be revealed in the puzzle. Each correct word guess does not award money in this portion of the game, rather after each guess they add money to their score, creating a money ladder (the player goes from $2 to $25, $25 to $250…and so on up to $25,000). After a correct guess, the player can choose one of the 6 letters in the main puzzle to be revealed, to which they can take a guess to the puzzle.
If at any point in this part of the game, the guesser exceeds the setter’s credit value, gives a wrong tossup guess, or guesses the main puzzle wrong, the jackpot value is cut in half. After 3 incorrect guesses, the game is over.
Disclaimer: I'm thinking that for this summer, I'd only do 3 shows as opposed to 5, just to pace myself. Wheel and Price are definitely staying, with $ale and Yahtzee going on hiatus as well coming back with Joker's in September. Although this is very tentative, I'm more leaning towards it!
