The 118th World Series concluded last night with the American League Champions, the Houston Astros, winning their 2nd World Series title in their 61 year history. They defeated the National League Champions, the Philadelphia Phillies 4 games to 2, in a best of 7 match up.
This was the Astros 5th appearance in the World Series, the others being 2005, 2017, 2019 and 2021. They won the 2017 World Series, which was their first in history.
This was the Phillies 8th appearance in the Fall Classic, having won only twice and now losing 6 times. Their first World Series win did not happen for them until 1980, which was a long wait for them considering they were one of the 8 original National League franchises dating back to when the first World Series was played way back in 1903. They were also the last of the "original 16" teams to win their first World Series and the only one to do so after the advent of expansion teams which began in 1961.
The Phillies other World Series appearances were in 1915, 1950, 1983, 1993, and 2009, in addition to their 2 World Series wins in 1980 and 2008.
2008 was their only other World Series title, against one of the youngest franchises in baseball, the Tampa Bay Rays. Tampa Bay only began playing in 1998, and it was their 11th season in existance.
Oddly enough the Phillies 1980 Series win came against another expansion team, the Kansas City Royals, who were only in their 12th season in existance.
Country singer Tim McGraw's father, Tug McGraw, was on the mound during the last out of the 1980 Series, a most historic moment in Philadelphia sports history.
That Philadelphia even made the post-season this year was a feat in and of itself as they were dead in the water in July, even firing their manager.
Due to the expanded and new post-season format, the Phillies eeked in as the third and final wild card team. They won a best 2 out of 3 game Wild Card series against the St. Louis Cardinals, then went on to win the Division Series against the 2021 World Champion Atlanta Braves, and then finally winning the 2022 National League Championship Series against another Cinderella team, the San Diego Padres. San Diego knocked out the 111 win Los Angeles Dodgers in their division series round.
Also the Houston Astros are the only team in Major League Baseball history to have won at least one pennant in each league. In 2005, they were still a National League Club. To balance out all six divisions in baseball however, after Houston got new ownership in 2012, they were moved from the National League's Central Division into the America League's Western Division. By doing so, all 3 divisions (East, Central and West) in both leagues (American & National) now have 5 teams each to balance things out a bit more.
I could go on and on but I dare say I've already said far more than I should have LOL!
