Arguably two of THE MOST famous and popular Americans died on this date.
45 summers ago, on Tuesday, August 16th, 1977, The King, Elvis Aron Presley, was pronounced dead at the very young age of 42. I remember I was 10 years old and at my favorite aunt's house. My cousins and I were in the back yard playing wiffle ball when the announcer over WFIL 56am radio announced the shocking news. Little then did I realize that a mere 11 months later my own Dad, who was the same age as Elvis, would suddenly and unexpectedly die.
And 74 years ago today, August 16th 1948, George Herman "Babe" Ruth, the single best known New York Yankee, if not the single best known professional baseball player period, died at the age of 53 with struggles from throat cancer.
I am approaching age 56 at the end of this calendar year. That I lived longer than Elvis Presley, my Dad, and Babe Ruth astounds me for some odd reason. I guess in my mind all three of them were larger than life, and beyond merely mortal.
So odd how many famous people share the same death date, and in some rare cases, the same date AND year.
Jim Henson and Sammy Davis Jr. are one example.
3rd President Thomas Jefferson and 2nd President John Adams both dying on the same date and year, within hours of one another was amazing enough. That they both died on July 4th, 1826, 50 years to the DAY of the date on the Declaration of Independence, a document both men were extremely pivotal to, is beyond incredible to me.
