Video Editing/Making Software

I have always been interested in video making/editing. I have seen several "fan-made" Dallas intros (the three-way split screen), and I always wondered what they used for making the video. Anyone have any suggestions as to any good software? Windows Movie Maker just doesn't cut it... lol

This is actually something that I uploaded. I always liked the "Dream Theme" version of the Dallas theme over the real one (It's from the album Dallas: The Music Story). I just took the season 10 intro and overlayed it with said theme. Anyway, I would love to be able to make my own version of the intro. Thanks in advance for any help!

P.S. : Don't spoil anything about that season, please. I am currently watching the series from start to finish, and I am currently halfway through DVD season 6. I love love love this show!! Thanks!

I've been an avid user of Final Cut Pro X and Sony Vegas myself. See if these do you any good.
