Here is how my idea would work.
Match Game '98 stunk. Only 5 celebrities. Only $5,000. No returning champions. Too frequently the answers had to be "bleeped". And perhaps I am in the vast minority, but Michael Burger as a host was so/so at best. So many game show fans seem to think he was sensational. I simply didn't see it. He was serviceable, but far from superb in my humble yet honest opinion.
Two things that peeved me about the CBS Rayburn and P.M. editions.
First, once a star was matched, they did not get to play again during the same game. So often there would be a great question and I wound up saying "Dog gonnit, I would have LOVED to have seen how Richard Dawson (or insert any celebrity name) would have answered that question."
Second, the host always went in the same order every time (Scoey, Brett, Charles, Elaine, Richard, Fannie).
With that in mind, here is how I would amend the main game.
1. Players can compete for up to 5 shows.
2. All main games would be played in 3 rounds (as was the case with Match Game P.M.)
3. During each round, a match would earn cold hard cash, which the player would keep no matter what. $50 in round 1 and 2, $100 in round 3. The top scorer would earn a $300 bonus, making $1,500 a perfect score.
4. Each round would feature 2 questions A and B. The challenger would go first in Round 1, the player in the lead would go first in Rounds 2 and 3. If the leading player in Round 3 ended up having a lead greater than $600, making it impossible for the other player to catch-up, the game would end right then and there, but $250 in consolation money would be added to the losing player's score.
5. All stars would be involved in all questions played.
6. For question 1, the host would start with Scoey and work through to Fannie. For question 2, the host would start with Brett and end with Scoey, question 3 start with Charles and end with Brett, and so on. This way, in theory, all 6 celebrities would get to answer first, unless the game was a runaway in which case the last question of Round 3 would not be played.
7. If after 3 rounds the money score was tied, the player who made the most number of matches would win the game. If both the money score and number of matches were also tied, a tie-breaker would be used, similar to Match Game Hollywood Squares.
Four possible answers to fill in a blank would be shown secretly to the 2 players. The challenger would get to pick the first one, the champion would pick the second and third one, and leave the last one for the challenger. In other words, each player would have TWO winning answers. Then the host would ask each star, starting with the Scoey position, to give a verbal response.
Super-Match round.
Two audience matches would be played.
The first one would have the top 4 answers to filling in a blank.
$200 for the top answer, $150 for the 2nd most, $100 for the 3rd and $50 for the 4th.
A total of $500 could be scored here.
The contestant is given 30 seconds to rattle off as many answers as s/he can. The contestant would also select one star to help them. The contestant and the celebrity would have to alternate giving answers. If one player could not think of something, they would have to say "Pass". If all 4 answers are filled in, the player gets $500 plus any time remaining on the clock to play the second audience match.
This time, there are the top 5 answers. $250 for the top, $200, $150, $100 and $50 for a total of $750 more.
As before, 30 seconds (plus any left over time from the first Super Match) would be given. As before, the player would select another star to assist him/her. If they get all 5 answers before time expires, another $750.
So if the player went 4 for 4 and then 5 for 5, they'd have another $1,250.
Then they would play for at least 10 times that or $12,500 in a head-to-head match with a star.
The board would have 10 boxes
S U P E R
M A T C H
Hidden behind six of the 10 letters would be the name of a star. Whatever star the player chooses, that's who their partner would be in the head to head match.
Hidden behind 1 box would say "Player's Choice". This means the player can choose whoever they wish to play the "head to head" match with.
Two of the boxes say "Double". If a double is picked, the money, in this case $12,500, would be doubled to $25,000. If the other double is also found before a star's name is revealed, then the $25,000 would re-double and the Super Match question would then be worth $50,000!!!
The last box on the SUPER MATCH board would contain a car. If the player selects that, they would not only play for the money but also a new car. Only 1 car can be won however, so if the player matches and gets the car, they would retire.
Any 5 time players would automatically play for the car in the Super Match, therefore the "Car" card would be replaced with a second "Player's Choice" card instead.
All episodes would be self-contained. Ideally there would be 3 regulars (The Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly & Richard Dawson seats) and 3 alternating stars.
