Last night (actually early this morning since they start the games so blessed late anymore), the Houston Astros won their second American League pennant in the past three seasons. They won one National League pennant back in 2005. After the 2012 season and realignment took place, the Astros were removed from the National League's Central Division into the American League's Western Division.
The Washington Nationals (formerly the Montreal Expos), are appearing in their first ever World Series after 51 seasons. They are, appropriately enough, the National League Champions of 2019.
For only the second time in 115 World Series, both teams participating in it are teams that were formed after 1960, in other words, expansion teams.
The only other time the World Series featured two expansion teams was in 2015 when the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets squared off.
This will be the first time that our nation's capitol has been represented in the Fall Classic since 1933, when the American League's Washington Senators last appeared in it.
After 1960, those original Senators pulled up stakes and moved to Minneapolis where they have been known as the Minnesota Twins since 1961. The NFL added the Minnesota Vikings that same year.
The "first" that I refer to concerns the New York Yankees.
After losing in game 6 last night and being eliminated from the post-season, this is the first decade (2010's) that the Yankees failed to make even one World Series appearance since the 1910's!!!

For the first time in 95 years, the nation's capital is home to a World Series champion, and this is the first postseason best-of-7 series in any sport (which also includes the NBA and NHL) that the road team has swept all seven games played. Meaning the Astros won three games in Nationals Park, but the Nationals won four in Minute Maid Park.
