Well, we'll see if we can *write* you a check for $5000. Good to meet you, Bill, as we play Speed Chain. Best way for me to explain this game is show you how a speed chain works. (ding) It's a four-link chain. In this example, we've spotted you the top link, which is FAST -- and the bottom link, which is REACTION. There's only one word per link -- and the correct solutions would lead to three different two-word phrases. After the first and last words are revealed, we will then give you seven seconds to think over the two words that are in the middle. When the thinking time starts, we reveal the initial letter of each central word -- like this... (ding) ...F and C, staying with this example. And when the thinking time is over, you'd try to come up with the right answers -- which in this case are... (ding) ...FOOD and CHAIN. Fast food, which you can buy at certain establishments; food chain, a common ecology term; "Chain Reaction", a movie starring Keanu Reeves and Morgan Freeman. (scattered laughter) And of course, the name of this show. Now, you get one chance to come up with both words. Identifying one word correctly pays $500 -- but both words right will pay $5000. (audience cheers) If you miss both, there's still a consolation prize of $250. Bill, if you're ready, here's *your* speed chain. (ding) This speed chain starts with SUMMER and ends with LETTERMAN. When the initial letter of each central word is revealed, your seven seconds of thinking time begin. When the buzzer sounds after the seven seconds, I'll call for your guesses. Your letters come and your time starts -- now. (timer with seven seconds is activated; buzz)Bill, for $5000, what are those middle words in the speed chain?

(scattered cheers) Audience seems to like your answers. If both are right, it's five large. Is Bill right about CAMP and DAVID? (dings; audience applause; win music plays)Nailed it! Summer camp, where you can send your kids; Camp David, the retreat for the U.S. President; David Letterman, of course, the longtime "Late Show" host. Congratulations, Bill, on winning $5000. Michael Clifford looks to add to his winnings of $9750 on the next episode of The $40,000 Chain Reaction. For all of us on the chain gang, I'm Doug Morris saying -- make it a great day, keep the faith and treasure your loved ones. (theme plays; audience applause)DR. PEPPER SNAPPLE GROUP
