Steven Anderson had been doing Scrabble. I had even shared with him a database of words and clues I created.
Either before doing episode 2 of WordPlay or before bringing back Three on a Match, I may do a Scrabble pilot to see how it goes.
It will differ somewhat from the Woolery version and also from the version I did previously.
It would be a self-contained episode.
Up to 5 words played per crossword round.
It would take 2 crossword wins to play the Bonus Sprint game.
First crossword would always be 9 letters. Always 2 blue squares. First to solve would score $100.
Second crossword would always be 8 letters, and would always have 1 blue and 1 pink square. First to solve would score $150.
Third crossword would always be 7 letters and would have 1 blue and 1 pink square. First to solve would score $200.
Fourth crossword would always have 6 letters and would have 1 blue and 1 pink square. First to solve would score $250.
Fifth and final crossword if necessary would be played in Speedword, would have no colored squares, and would be worth $300.
First player to score $500 or more would win one game.
If a player wins $700 - $0 in a shutout, they will win a $500 bonus.
Both players keep all money earned in each crossword game.
If each player wins one crossword round, the tie-breaker would be one Speedword, 7 letters, no pink or blue squares. Winner would get another $500 and advance to the Bonus Sprint.
Some new twists.
Firstly, at the Bonus Sprint, there will always be a 6 letter word and a 7 letter word. The player will have a total of 6 letters to place between the two words.
Solving the first word will be worth some money.
The first word, six letters:
Solve just from the clue without seeing any letters at the bottom - $2,500.
With 1 letter placed - $2,000
2 letters - $1,500
3 letters - $1,000
4 letters - $500
5 letters - $0 but a correct solve allows you to play the last word by placing one letter.
Solving both words within 6 letters will win the Bonus Sprint Jackpot which starts at $7,500 and grows by $2,500 per day not won.
So if you solve the 6 letter Bonus Sprint word right away, you'd win $2,500. Solving the second word would net another $7,500 at least, for a $10,000 potential payoff.
Any incorrect guess of a word or a misspelled word ends the Bonus Sprint immediately.
Players will now have a choice with respect to the pink and blue bonus squares during the crossword round. They can either play it safe, or they can gamble.
If you solve a word on a blue square, you can immediately collect a $500 bonus which is guaranteed, or you can forfeit it in exchange for having the Bonus Sprint jackpot increased by $1,000.
If you solve a word on a pink square, you can immediately collect a $1,000 bonus which is guaranteed, or you can forfeit it in exchange for having the Bonus Sprint jackpot increased by $2,500.
Any player winning 5 matches in a row will win an instant $20,000 bonus. Win another 5 matches in a row and get another $20,000 instant bonus, then retire after playing the 10th and final Bonus Sprint game.
As always, the crossword game will have tiles and three of them will have bad letters (stoppers) which would lose a player his/her turn.
Let me know what you think friends.
Best,
Bill
