I'm curious if anyone here is old enough to remember when Scrabble was on NBC?
It was July 2, 1984 and NBC debuted Scrabble that day. I must have been between summer jobs because I remember watching the debut. Took me a moment or two to "get it", but once I did I loved it.
My favorite version was when they had to actually spell the words. I realize it was a very unpopular thing for the show, but I personally loved it, since Scrabble is, at its core, a game where you have to spell words!
I very much liked that they did the pot based on the number of remaining empty spaces during this time, rather than the $25 per letter placed pot version. I'm a fan of pots in games and was kind of sad when it went to a flat $500 for the crossword game and $1,500 for the Sprint, later changing it to $1,000 for the Sprint once each episode became self-contained.
I wish too that during the spelling/second pot era, that the Sprint Round was still played for 3 times the pot from the front game, rather than a flat $1,500.
Another thing that really disappointed me was in 1993, when it came back to NBC, the new music was not good, the new set was bland, even the new logo was bland. What was worse, no more bonus money during crossword games, rather, those monies were put into the bonus sprint jackpot which started at a piddly $1,000!!! Just awful.
Just curious how you all felt about these varying changes with Scrabble. Along with Price is Right, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and Family Feud, Scrabble lent itself to being a game that anybody could play along with. It's a pity that it hasn't come back to television again.
