Twelve score and eight years ago, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, many men signed a most historic document, the Declaration of Independence.
These bold and courageous men are collectively known as our Founding Fathers.
They pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to give birth to a nation, the United States of America.
Without question our nation has not been united on very many fronts nor with political ideologies but what does unite the citizens of this nation is the God given freedoms of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Untold numbers of men and women serving in our Armed Forces have made the ultimate sacrifice, their very lives, so that we could continue as a nation to live free.
Our nation has had myriad awful times as well as glorious and celebratory ones. As my Mom used to tell me when I was growing up "We have to learn to take the bad with the good."
Also on this date in 1964, my parents were married. They were married just 14 years and 11 days when my Dad passed away in mid July 1978.
Were they still among the living, today would mark their 60th wedding anniversary. Dad would be 89 years young and Mom 88.
Because they united, they gave birth to a baby boy, namely, yours truly.
Because our Founding Fathers united for a singular cause, independence, they gave birth to a nation.
Happy 60th Anniversary Mom and Dad...you are so far away from me but remain ever so near.
Happy 248th Birthday to the United States of America, and may she have a great many more for countless generations to come.

And if it wasn't for the men and women who gave their lives, we wouldn't be able to have this also be the day a Feud started up again...
As in this being the day Ray Combs' revival of Family Feud debuted on CBS in 1988 after 2-3 years of Feud-lessness (with Dawson's run being canceled not that long ago at the time)

Our country may be in rough shape, but I truly believe that despite our imperfections we remain true to the founding fathers' vision. We've had both good times and bad times, but one thing remains-the cause of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I join in wishing America a happy 248th birthday and continued blessings for many years to come.
Also, my condolences to you for the loss of your parents.
