We're picking up right where left off. \ John Bergman, who has won more than $41,000, just boosted his spendable cash total to $290 when time ran out. KNBC - LOS ANGELES Staff announcer: From NewsCenter 4 to the "Wheel", we open up the vault and salute the retiring Pat Sajak -- tonight at 11.
(dramatic music plays) Steve Anderson: If you put $20 on the red.......$30 on the green......and $40 on the yellow......you could win $50,000 playing Three on a Match.("Jet Set" plays) Here's your host -- the star of Three on a Match -- Doug Morris!(audience cheers; Doug knocks on wall for good luck a la Bill Cullen) Thank you, Steve. Hellooooooo, everybody, and welcome to the new Three on a Match. We continue our premiere week by welcoming back our contestants, John Bergman and George Custer. (audience cheers) George is our challenger with $10 to the good -- and John has $41,310 plus $290 in spendable cash. And John will be spending that cash shortly at the grid. Now, before we resume play, we want to take a moment and clarify something that happened late on our last show. Roll that clip, please.
(clip from Wednesday show rolls) 4. The female's effort's not ever finished(John rings in)Doug: John? John: "A Woman's Work Is Never Done" (time's up bell)Doug: That's -- correct. bighornbattle johnnyb
Let's sneak this last one in quickly, folks.
5. Never believe an individual more than the age of 15 doubled
(John rings in)
Doug: John?
John: "Never Trust Anyone Over Thirty"
Doug: I -- have "*Don't* trust anyone over thirty" on my card. Since we started "never" on the riddlegram and John clinched the win, let's give a point to each player, okay?
bighornbattle johnnyb
(audience cheers) (clip ends)
Okay, by the time time in our show was running out and we wanted to sneak in that last riddlegram, John had clinched the win in that particular showdown.
The last riddlegram you saw there was for the phrase "Don't trust anyone over thirty". We didn't put the riddlegram in quotes -- meaning we weren't looking for an exact quote or title.
However, John, you started your answer with "never" and we started our riddlegram with "never". So it was best to start your response with a synonym for "never". The rest of your answer was correct -- so we gave you the point. And because you started by matching our "never", we felt it was only fair to award George the point in that final riddlegram.
That's why that showdown ended 3-1 and George has $10.
Now, George, we don't think this ruling is going to cost you the game. Should S&P feel this ruling put you or John at an unfair disadvantage, the losing party won't get a strike.
But that being said, John, because you have at least $200 in your coffers...
(ding)
...this means we're starting the day at the grid -- and you're in search of three matching musical instruments. By the way, we shuffled the instruments while the clip rolled. We also shuffled in a stop sign -- so beware of that.
John, please begin.

(buzz) (audience groans)How revolting is that? First box out of the gate and that happens. All you lost was the $30. So the remaining $260 are returned to your podium, John, and we get ready for another showdown. Let's open up our category board. The top two categories are left over from our last show -- I've Got A Bad Feeling About This and Sports Talk. The new category is What Do You Know? With each category are five riddlegrams. You just saw examples of two riddlegrams -- where we take common expressions and change the wording. What our players must do is give us the original phrase or title. Some more examples: Beverages atop that home -- that's another way of saying -- drinks are on the house. And "Simmer Thy Eagerness" is another way of expressing the sitcom title "Curb Your Enthusiasm". Players, each time you chime in and answer correctly, you score one point. If you anticipate and answer incorrectly, the point goes to your opponent. The player who scores more points after five riddlegrams picks up an award attached to the selected category. John, you won the most recent showdown. So please choose a category.

Okay, you'd hope this doesn't have much value -- lest it opens a door for George. (ding)Mmm -- yeah -- 90 bucks and a couple of freebies. That opens a door for you, George, if you win this showdown. $10 per point helps. These riddlegrams lead to subtitles of "Star Wars" episodic movies -- or titles of other official "Star Wars" productions. We'll need the exact subtitle of the episodic movie -- or the exact title of the official "Star Wars" production. 1. "That Fresh Faith"
2. "That Evil Federation Pummels Again"
3. "Din Djarin" 4. "Role Originated by Sir Alec Guinness"
5. "Small Furry Inhabitants of Endor" George and John, please PM me your answer and a buzzcode from 1-100. Due to stormy weather forecasted this weekend in my neighborhoods, deadlines will be relaxed on this category. -D.M.

(dings; audience cheers; theme plays) You did it! John, congratulations, your the first player on our watch, to make an instant match. For that, $50,000. (audience cheers) Now, during your buying spree, we had a slight miscalculation as to how much money you had left. You're truly ending up with $290 in spendable cash... ...that plus another $500 will join you at Three in a Row. The $50,000, unfortunately, is not spendable at the bonus game. But nevertheless -- how do you feel, champ?

Well, believe it -- more than $91,000 in cash -- with a chance to win more at Three in a Row. George, I'm afraid that ruling we made late on the last show had no effect on the outcome of the game. So this loss will count against you. But you'll plenty of time to make a comeback. John, please come this way. I think you know how to get here by now. (theme plays; audience applause) (Doug and John walk over to bonus game area) Okay, you know how this works by now. But this is our debut week. So some may not be familiar with our Three in a Row game. Again, you had $290 unspent in the main game. For winning the game, we also give you... (ding)...$500 more to spend. Now here's what's going to happen. In these white boxes, we've randomly hidden the numbers 1 through 9. You'll buy those numbers at the rate of $100 each -- sight unseen. After you buy a number, we'll reveal its location. Keep buying numbers until you align three of your purchases straight across, up and down, or diagonally. Once that happens, we advance to the next phase. And since you can afford seven numbers, I like your chances to advance to the next phase. One more thing -- if your first three picks are in a row -- its *another* $50,000 bonus. (audience cheers)Taking your total winnings to just north of $141,000. So good luck and off you go. John, as before, please buy a number by saying "$100 on the (number)". Weather's calmed down here to where we can pick up the pace a bit.

(dings; audience cheers)Got it straight across. Okay, John, you know what's next. We also stashed this grid with thousands of dollars in cash. They range in value from $3000 to $30,000. Select *any* number that's visible -- and it doesn't have to be in the horizontal line. We'll reveal the amount behind the number. You may then keep the cash or try to trade up for a higher amount. You'll have three attempts to win up to $30,000. Good luck and pick a number -- 1, 2, 4, 7 or 8.

(ding) (scattered cheers) $4000. That's one of the lowest cash awards up there. Knowing that -- you could stop and take the money -- or give it back and try to trade up towards $30,000. (audience shouts suggestions)
