WOAI - SAN ANTONIO Staff announcer: Celebrating a native San Antonian. Carol Burnett's birthday -- tonight at 7.
(dramatic music plays) Steve Anderson: If you put $20 on the red.......$30 on the green......and $40 on the yellow......you could win $50,000 playing Three on a Match.("Jet Set" plays) Here's your host -- the star of Three on a Match -- Doug Morris!(audience cheers; Doug knocks on wall for good luck a la Bill Cullen) Thank you, Steve. Hellooooooo, everybody, and welcome to the new Three on a Match. Last time we were together, John Bergman won a game and collected $20,000 from our Three in a Row board. So far he has $31,250 in cash winnings. (audience cheers) And welcome back Chris Chambers, please. (audience cheers) Chris was our champion from our preview special and a winner of more than $14,000. Now, when we were last together, we were just starting a game, John had just picked a category and durned if we ran out of time. The category board remains frozen. So let's reopen the board. The categories were, and still are, 1980s TV, X Marx the Spot, and General Info. John chose 1980s TV and then we had to call it a day. So we'll now reveal what's behind that category -- and I hope this was worth the wait. (ding) (audience cheers)I'd say so -- $100. You'd need at least $90 to go to the grid. Now, for those who haven't seen this version of Three on a Match, this is a good time to explain what's about to happen. This category contains five riddlegrams. We've taken the titles of five TV shows from the 1980s and expressed them in other words. And just so we're clear, if the regular series aired at least one episode on January 1, 1980; December 31, 1989; or some point in time in between, then it's fair game. Players, each time you come up with the actual title of the show, you score one point. But if you anticipate and give me a wrong answer, the point goes to your opponent. Player with more points collects the $100. And remember, *every* point then translates to $10. So, with all that explained -- good luck and away we go... 1. "Gordon Shumway"
2. "George and Weezie"
3. "22nd Letter of the Alphabet"
4. "That Small Horse I Own"
5. "Generators"
Chris and John, please PM me your answer and a buzzcode from 1-100.

1. "Gordon Shumway"(Chris rings in)Doug: Chris? Chris: ALF Doug: That's right. EaglesWings1975a johnnyb
Doug: Gordon Shumway is ALF's actual name. One point for Chris. Next riddlegram.
2. "George and Weezie"
(Chris rings in)
Doug: Chris again.
Chris: The Jeffersons
Doug: Names of the married main characters. Right again.
EaglesWings1975a johnnyb
Doug: One more point and you'll win this showdown, Chris. John, you'll need three in a row. Next riddlegram.
3. "22nd Letter of the Alphabet"
(Chris rings in)
Doug: Chris for the win.
Chris: V
Doug: That's right.
EaglesWings1975a johnnyb
(audience cheers)
Doug: Now -- we still play out the showdown with the two remaining riddlegrams. Chris, if you can score the remaining two points, you'll win $50 on top of the $100 attached to this category. John, now you get to play spoiler.
4. "That Small Horse I Own"
(time passes) (buzz)
Doug: No bronies here, I gather. "My Little Pony" was the correct answer. (scattered groans) No clean sweep -- but $10 can still be won on this last riddlegram.
5. "Generators"
(time passes) (buzz)
Doug: Another animated show -- "Transformers". (more groans) But the good news is Chris starts this show on a winning note...
...with $100 *plus* $10 a point...
...that's $130. Now, Chris, let met give you things to think about. First, let's bring in a new category...
...Knock Knock. Chris, you have more than enough money to go to the grid.
Right now in the grid, we have three bonus game symbols. There's a "Feeling Lucky?" symbol in each column -- and those bonus placards will never be obstructed by the "no match" or stop sign card.
Anytime a player wins a game by matching three "Feeling Lucky?" cards gets to play our "Feeling Lucky?" game for tens of thousands of dollars in cash just before playing Three in a Row.
So, with that much of a carrot dangling in front of you, Chris, would you like to go to the grid -- or pick another category?

Chris: $ 20 on the Red please (ding)Doug: And with that pot of gold, this board deals with things that are lucky. Chris: $ 30 on the Green please (ding) (scattered cheers and gasps) Hey now! Chris, if you can find one more pot of gold in the $40 column, you win the game, a $50,000 bonus, *and* the loss that's against you is wiped away. So -- a lot is writing on this next pick. Think it over.

Knock Knock is hiding... (ding)...$80. These riddlegrams lead to titles of songs by the rock group The Doors. 1. "Ignite This Person's Blaze"
2. "Adore This Person Twice"
3. "Persons Be Unusual"
4. "Patiently Anticipating the Appearance of the Brightest Star"
5. "Cowboys Atop That Hurricane"
Chris and John, please PM me your answer and a buzzcode from 1-100.

"Ignite This Person's Blaze" (time passes) (buzz)Doug: Ah, one of their masterpieces with great keyboard work from Ray Manzarek -- "Light My Fire". Next riddlegram. "Adore This Person Twice" (Chris rings in)Doug: Chris? Chris: Double Date Doug: No -- it's "Love Me Two Times". So that point goes to John. EaglesWings1975a johnnyb
"Persons Be Unusual"
(time passes) (buzz) Another masterpiece -- "People Are Strange". Okay -- next one.
"Patiently Anticipating the Appearance of the Brightest Star"
(time passes) (buzz)
We're paying our writers by the word again? (scattered laughter from crowd) "Waiting for the Sun". Chris, need this for the tie.
"Cowboys Atop That Hurricane"
(time passes) (buzz)
It's their last top 20 hit -- "Riders On The Storm".
John wins it one-nil for $80. We'll kick an extra $10 for the one point.
That's $90. So, John, do you want to go to the grid or pick another category? If you want to start another showdown, let's bring in a new category.
Keep Your Distance.
So what will be, John? Try to bring the house down with just $90 to the grid -- or pick one of these categories?

Had a feeling you'd go for extra lunch money. (ding)Speaking of "extra", $70 and three free boxes. For newcomers, these are just titles and common expressions. No common bond in this category. 1. "Cutting Tool Marathoner"
2. "Flaming Seats for Horses"
3. "That Nuptial Ceremony Vocalist"
4. "One Hilarious Event Occurred En Route Toward Rome's Historic Plaza"
5. Royal flush's highest card is insolvent

1. "Cutting Tool Marathoner" (time passes) (buzz)Doug: Well a cutting tool would be a blade and a marathoner would be a runner. We're looking for -- "Blade Runner". (scattered groans) On we go. 2. "Flaming Seats for Horses" (time passes) (buzz)Doug: Ah, the comedy classic -- "Blazing Saddles". Let try this one. 3. "That Nuptial Ceremony Vocalist" (Chris rings in)Doug: Chris? Chris: The Weeding Singer (buzz)Doug: Oh no. Not "Weeding" -- it's "Wedding". You gave us a double "e" when you should've given us a double "d". So that's a point for John. EaglesWings1975a johnnyb
Doug: Next riddlegram.
4. "One Hilarious Event Occurred En Route Toward Rome's Historic Plaza"
(time passes) (buzz)
Doug: See, this time our riddlers had reason to be wordy since the original title itself is wordy. "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum". Chris, need this for the tie.
5. Royal flush's highest card is insolvent
(time passes) (buzz)
Doug: The highest card would be an ace -- and insolvent would be another way of saying in a deficit situation or "in the hole". So -- ace in the hole is the right answer. (scattered groans) And I'll agree, that deserves a groan. (tosses out card)
John gets another one-nil victory. And this means, John, you're up to...
...$170. Now, we'd normally bring in a new category...
...but we have a matter of free boxes. They're of a "use or lose" nature as you know, John. So would you like to go to the grid now or start another showdown?
(audience shouts suggestions)

You kinda sorta hope there's no bonus here. (dings; audience cheers)Ohhhh -- but there's hope for Chris. $40 plus a doubler. Doubler doubles all the values for this category. That means we're playing for $20 a point. The winner of the showdown actually scores $80 instead of $40. And if someone scores all five points, we'll award $100 instead of $50. These riddlegrams lead to titles of movies or TV shows that starred Groucho Marx or him and his brothers. 1. "Ye Wagered Thy Existence"
2. "Mallard Consommé"
3. "24 Hours Attending Churchill Downs Competitions"
4. "An Evening Attending That Italian Performance"
5. "Explain That Thing for Julius"
Chris and John, please PM me your answer and a buzzcode from 1-100.

1. "Ye Wagered Thy Existence" (time passes) (buzz)Ah, it's the game show rebooted just a few seasons ago -- "You Bet Your Life. 2. "Mallard Consommé"(time passes) (buzz)The classic comedy movie "Duck Soup" 3. "24 Hours Attending Churchill Downs Competitions"(time passes) (buzz)Oh with the Kentucky Derby coming up, I thought Churchill Downs would be a tipoff. "A Day at the Races" 4. "An Evening Attending That Italian Performance"(time passes) (buzz)"A Night at the Opera". Last one. 5. "Explain That Thing for Julius"(time passes) (buzz)Do our writers get the money? (scattered laughter from crowd) "Tell It to Groucho". Julius is Groucho's real first name. Well, let's break the tie with a riddlegram from Hodge Podge. "Nation Down Under with Canberra as its Capital City"
Chris and John, please PM me your answer and a buzzcode from 1-100.

"Nation Down Under with Canberra as its Capital City"(time passes) (buzz)You'd think it would be Sydney or Melbourne. But Canberra's the capital city of Australia -- and "Australia" is the title of a great movie. Hence why we've got it in quotes. Let's try this one. "Paddle, Paddle, Paddle Thy Yacht"
Chris and John, please PM me your answer and a buzzcode from 1-100.

"Paddle, Paddle, Paddle Thy Yacht"(scattered groans) (time passes) (buzz)Could someone tell Lester Holt the newscast will start late tonight? (scattered laughter from crowd) It's that classic song title -- "Row, Row, Row, Your Bow". Let's try *this* one. I think you'll get this one. "The First Six Letters and the Last Vowel of the English Alphabet"
Chris and John, please PM me your answer and a buzzcode from 1-100.

"The First Six Letters and the Last Vowel of the English Alphabet"(Chris rings in)Doug: Yes, Chris? Chris: ABCDEFU Doug: Yay! We've broken the tie. (audience cheers)To save up on time, we went ahead and appropriately credited you, Chris, with $40 for winning the showdown plus $10 for the point then doubled it all from the doubler for a total of $100. Just as quick, let's bring in a new category. Words from Our Sponsors. Chris, you've got $100 and just enough to go to the grid... ...John has $170; that's plenty to go to the grid. But the champ needs to win another showdown. Theoretically, if John wins another showdown, the champ would have more than $200 and *have* to go to the grid. But you may go for the win now at the grid -- or pick another category and start another showdown, Chris.

Let's see what we stashed there this time. (ding)(scattered cheers) $80 and three freebies. John, if you win this showdown, you'll have more than $200 and you'll have to go to the grid. Chris, if you win this showdown, you might have $200 in total. We'll see. Depends on how many points you score. These riddlegrams lead to classic and current advertising slogans. 1. "Rouge-Colored Toro awards thee bird's appendages"
2. "Without regulations, only correct"
3. "Disintegrates inside thy piehole, instead of thy fist"
4. "Consider farther from that baked roll"
5. "Optically scan these United States of America while inside thy Impala"
