The Donald “Disco” Duck Story.
(audience laughs)
I’m gonna take a guess and say “Solid Gold”.

Thanks, Shadoe. We're in the middle of a $2500 round. Shederick, you're trailing -- and it's your turn... ...to pick a square.

Kevin Kolsen for a block *and*.... (ding)...four bills. Kevin, from Wheel of Fortune, here's a question about -- misfortune. A man named Gee Jon found himself on the wrong end of history. Was he the trombone player in Stanford University's band who was tackled in the final play of that unforgettable 1982 football game against Cal -- or was he the first condemned person to be executed by lethal gas?

Well, when you have a name like Gee, the fates have it out for you!
*laughter*
Gee Jon was executed by lethal gas.

Gee Jon was on the wrong end of history in 1924 when he was executed by lethal gas. It lead to the creation of the gas chamber. Shederick gets the block... (audience applause; ding)...and improves to $700. Matt, you're playing X. You're leading with $1250. Where to?

Nels for the block.

Nels completing the top row. Matt wants to go for a block *and*... (ding) ...$500. Nels, here's your question. Which city served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790?

Seems like we were there "just yesterday" -- New York City. And it was in New York on May 1, 1789, that George Washington was inaugurated becoming the first President of the United States. Matt gets the block... (audience applause; ding)...and pads the leads... ...Shederick, you're playing O. Where do you go?

Bill Mcdee for the block

Post by billmcdee on Apr 16, 2023 9:06:26 GMT -5
That's me! And not to be nitpicky, but I am a novice US Presidential history buff. Old George's inauguration was April 30, 1789 actually. No, I'm not so old that I was there to witness it first hand I am very OCD about dates, probably because I had none during the first 20 plus years of my life. Okay, fire when ready please Mr. Morris.

Thank you, Charley Weaver -- (scattered laughter from crowd) -- for correcting our researchers by 24 hours. Must be the jet lag. Bill McDee for a block and... (ding) ...$400 -- and -- hey now... (model from On A Roll makes a sudden cameo appearance at players' area)
...it's one of my lovely assistants from one of my other shows on another network, Havana... (audience cheers)...who has brought this prop, Bill... ...that I gather your familiar. This particular playing card is the focus of your question. Juice Newton had a hit in the early 1980s with the song "Queen of Hearts". Now, yes or no, was an earlier version of the song recorded?
|
|
|
Post by billmcdee on Apr 17, 2023 5:32:39 GMT -5
You mean to tell me one of my props was pilfered and I am NOT playing with a full deck on Gambit?
And while Juice Newton is an original name, this was not an original song by her. So the answer is YES, there was another version of this very song recorded prior to hers.
Now kindly give me back my card! (Chuckling)

We'll *deal* with your cards later, Bill. (scattered groans) Shederick, Bill says an earlier version of the song "Queen of Hearts", made famous by Juice Newton, was recorded. Agree or disagree for the block.

I would've said "no" and lost. But the correct answer is "yes". The first version of "Queen of Hearts" was recorded by Dave Edmunds. In 1979, it peaked at #11 in the U.K. and #12 in Ireland -- but didn't have much success elsewhere in the world. Shederick's got a block. (audience applause; ding)And we're back to Matt.

Steven S.

Post by dougmorrisontheair on Apr 18, 2023 7:03:12 GMT -5
Going to Steven this time for your fourth square and... (ding)...$750. Remember, if you can't get three in a row, any five out of nine wins. So, Steven, with that, here's a question about a famous Aussie. Australian actor Rod Taylor starred in the short-lived espionage TV series "Masquerade". What was his character's colorful last name?

actually, the character's last name was Green.

Ya bought that, eh? Rod Taylor's character's last name was actually -- Lavender. (buzz) Should've disagreed. That means the square goes to Shederick. (ding)Shederick takes the lead for the first time in this Hollywood Squares game. Shederick, before you pick a square... ...you have four Os up there. If you win a fifth O, that's an automatic win. So, you're playing for the round, $2500, plus the value of the square you select.
