It is hard for me to fathom, as I was one of very few of us alive back then, that it's been exactly 30 years ago to this very day, Friday, May 22nd, 1992, that Johnny Carson was the host of "The Tonight Show" for the final time. It was 30 years ago TONIGHT that this episode aired on NBC. I remember watching it "live" back then.
Carson hosted the show for 29 years and about 8 months (Oct. 1, 1962 - May 22, 1992). He has now been gone from the show longer than he hosted it.
I was 25 then, now here I sit 55. I no longer watch any of the current late night programs, very poor excuses for talk shows anymore.
Elvis Presley, Babe Ruth, Lucille Ball, Betty White, Johnny Carson, all national treasures during the 20th century in America, and dear Betty well into the 21st century as well.
It's frightening to see just how fast 30 years have gone by.
And of course that following Monday back in 1992, Jay Leno became the new permanent host of the show, a job he would hold until Feb 2014 (with one brief interruption when Conan O'Brien was to take over as permanent host...and that debacle ended quite badly sorry to say).

At least Conan got something better out of it: a new show on TBS.
