An 8 letter word, the clue is...
It only happens once a year...
(crowd) "BIRTHDAY!"
On Monday, July 2nd 1984, Scrabble, starring ChucK Woolery, debuted on NBC Daytime.
In my humble opinion, Scrabble was one of the most clever and most technologically amazing game shows of all time.
In spite of format changes, and the big $55,500 10 game win payout being reduced first to $40,000, then later reduced further with the final self-contained format episodes, this game was always very fun to play along with. The original run of this show ended in 1990 but came back temporarily in 1993 on NBC. The 1993 version was awful, except for Woolery. The 1993 version really got super cheap with the bonus sprint payoff and the show only lasted about half a year in 1993. The set for the original series was amazing, the 1993 set looked very barren and mostly temporary. While all sets are temporary, some just look it far more than others.
To the best of my recollection, this was the last new game show to debut before I became a legal adult in December of 1984. I was so enamored with the program during its first week in fact that I skipped attending my town's Independence Day parade that year!
