As mentioned in the announcements, this will be a 2 player affair.
The rules will be explained during the episode, but it's reasonably simple to understand.
Players will take turns trying to earn a trip to the matching board by answering a series of questions in various categories which the players will choose.
The champion will select the first of 4 hidden categories and must answer 3 correctly before getting 3 wrong to earn a trip to the matching board.
7, 8 or 9 picks of the board will be earned, depending on how the question plays out.
The question will be based on the category selected and there will be six sets of initials (Blockbusters style questions).
I will give clues and the player must select the correct initials and also give the correct answer to score 1 point. 3 points earns a trip to the matching board.
For example if the category was BILLS & WILLIAMS...
And the initials might be:
C O M B RH F
Assassinated President - M for McKinley
Portrayed Fred Mertz - F for Frawley
Original host of "Three On A Match" - C for Cullen
Newspaper magnate - RH for Randolph Hearst
Portrayed Dr. Bruce Banner - B for Bixby
Controversial former Fox News host - O for O'Reilly
Sometimes I will ask a question or give a clue that doesn't belong with any of the given initials, and if that is the case the player must say "NO MATCH" to earn one point...
A "No Match" clue would be - Former US President who later joined the Supreme Court (Taft), since there is no "T" in the list, the player would have to say "No Match" to earn one point.
Incorrect answers gives 1 point to your opponent, first to 3 points plays the matching board.
Players will get 7, 8 or 9 picks from the board depending on how well or how poorly they do with the question they are given.
If a player makes a match on the big board, they win 1 board, if not, their opponent wins 1 board.
The winner of the second board plays a mini-bonus game the Jackpot Match for more cash, $2,500 plus $500 per show that it is not won.
First to win 3 boards becomes the champ, can earn extra cash for winning the match, and also plays the Bonus Bucks endgame where the top payoff is $50,000 in cash plus a car.
Any questions? My question is who would like to participate in the first episode of the 2018 season of Three On A Match?

Frank Caliendo (impersonating Don Pardo): It's the return of Three On A Match! Frank Caliendo (impersonating Don Pardo): And now, from the Bill Cullen Theatre at Rockefeller Center, in the heart of The Big Apple here is your host…Bill McDee! (applause) That's me! (knocking on the wall behind me) Hello and welcome once again to the latest, and hopefully greatest reincarnation of the old classic, it's Three on a Match seen here each and every week day afternoon here on NBC. We have a new format we're trying out. Traditionally the game had three contestants, but starting this season, it will be just a mono y mono match, one against one, and both players taking on the big matching board for cash prizes. Seated at the red desk, which normally is reserved for returning champions, we have Mr. Lenny Jackson! (applause) Welcome to Three on a Match Lenny, tell the folks a little something about yourself if you please.

Terrific! I said the same thing at this time...(crying) 33 years ago!
Once when in 12th grade I went to a restaurant and when the waitress gave me my check I said she had overcharged me.
When she asked why, I replied "I'm in 12th grade and I qualify for the senior discount."
(some chuckles in the audience)...
Any plans for after graduation Lenny?

Stand by while we introduce your opponent, Matt Ringgenberg!

Matt, I'm a fan of M*A*S*H and Hawkeye is my favorite character, and you hail from the Hawkeye state of Iowa if memory serves me correctly.
Remind our friends watching about yourself if you please.

The supermarket deals with a lot of greens, and so too do we here at Three on a Match, lots of greenbacks to be won, and I hope you can do so as well Matt! Here's how our game works. If you can match three like symbols on the matching board, you will win a cash prize. It can be worth anywhere from $250 to as much as $1,000 depending on how well you do. Before you can play at the matching board, you must first earn that right. To do that, contestants must correctly identify a series of initials relative to a specific category. Lenny will play the first question and select the first category. The categories are hidden behind the colored slides above me. Lenny select a color, red, green, yellow or blue please, and we'll reveal the category and the answer board with the series of initials.

I think that's just what Desi Arnaz said during his first date with Lucille Ball. Lenny, the category is "Running Mates". Let's look at the list of initials... G.F. J.T. W.M. D.Q. J.E. S.P. and you also see the No Match there. Lenny, I'm going to name a former United States Presidential candidate, your job is to match him or her with his or her running mate's initials, and then also give me the correct answer to the initials you selected. You'll earn 1 point for each correct answer. If you give an incorrect answer, your opponent will score one point. First player to score 3 points will go to the matching board. Keep in mind too if you believe the initials for the correct answer does not appear anywhere, you will say "No Match" Here's the first one. John Kerry ran in 2004 for the Presidency. Who was his Vice-Presidential running mate? (Lenny, you have 48 hours from now to identify the initials and give the correct answer or to say "No Match" if you believe the correct initials are not up on the board).

Is right for one point! (applause) Two things I want to briefly mention before asking the next question. Should a player get all 3 correct on their first three tries, they will earn 9 picks at the matching board. In other words if the final score is 3-0, whoever scores 3 gets 9 picks, if the final score during a question is 3-1, 8 picks for the winner and if the score ends 3-2, 7 picks to the winner of the question. Also, if a player gives an incorrect response, we will say so, but we will not tell you the correct answer nor have it eliminated from the board. Moving on, question 2. In 1904, who was incumbent President Theodore Roosevelt's running mate?

That is right again! Very well done! (applause) If you can match this next clue to the correct initials and give the correct answer Lenny, you'll go to the board with nine big picks! In 1840, William Henry Harrison was elected President. Who was Harrison's running mate?

Is right again! That university is getting a very bright new student! Nine picks of the matching board for you Lenny! Lenny, a reminder to you and to any new viewers or even old viewers, you have a total of 9 picks of the board this time around. You will select a column number (20, 30 or 40) and the color (red, green, yellow or blue). Each column has 4 different pictures but one of the 12 boxes is a "NO MATCH" box, just to make things interesting. You can select a maximum of 3 boxes per column only, and if you match three like items, you will win one board, plus the cash award attached to the last box you select. If you fail to make a match, your opponent will win the board and $250. Finally, if your first 3 picks match, we will pay you double the cash award of the last box you select of those first three. Lenny, the board is yours, select a column and a color please.

20 on the Yellow... (flip) A trombone. Musical instruments is the theme of this board. There may be a trombone in the 30 and 40 column as well Lenny. If you find them on your next 2 picks, you'll win double the dollar value attached to the winning pick. 8 picks remaining, where to now?

40 on the Red perhaps? There it is! (applause) And how much money for that? Hey, almost top dollar! Would have been $900 had you picked that instead of 40 on the Green... (theme starting at 0:28 seconds) Lenny has scored the first board of the match and $450, his to keep no matter what, but it takes THREE boards to win the match. Matt will have his first question board coming up! Back in just a moment! (applause)

At the end of today's show, one of our two contestants will play the Bonus Bucks end game. If they get an instant match playing it, they will win a $30,000 cash bonus plus this, Frank? Frank Caliendo: It's a brand new car! (applause) Discover the eye-catching and dynamic 2018 Regal Sportback luxury sedan, featuring a coupe-like profile with sportback rear access. The Sportback by Buick. Retail value…Twenty-five thousand dollars, okay Bill! (applause) Lenny Jackson won the first board on today's match. Time for Matt Ringgenberg to try to catch up. Matt, three more categories left in the shuffle, which color do you want, green, yellow or blue?

And the yellow category is... State Capitals. Matt, I will name a capital city, you match it with the correct initial among those listed, and also identify the name of the state. A reminder, if you believe the correct set of initials does not appear in the list, you will say "No Match". Okay, first one... trying to get 3 right before 3 wrong... Albany is the capital of which state?
