(Bells ring as Bill finishes his answers)
ME: OK. Let's post the answers and see how we did.
1. SAX 2. PLAYS 3. SAX 4. PLAYS 5. SAX 6. SAX 7. PLAYS
ME: Hmmm...all these names are very recognizable, so let's just go down the list. Computer, for #1, was Charlie Parker a SAX player?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. SAX 2. PLAYS 3. SAX 4. PLAYS 5. SAX 6. SAX 7. PLAYS
ME: "The Bird," founder of the bebop style of jazz. Did #2, Edward Albee, write PLAYS?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. SAX 2. PLAYS 3. SAX 4. PLAYS 5. SAX 6. SAX 7. PLAYS
ME: Wrote "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and died in 2016. Is #3, David Mamet, a SAX player?
(DRUM BEAT. Audience groans)
1. SAX 2. PLAYS 3. SAX 4. PLAYS 5. SAX 6. SAX 7. PLAYS
ME: Mmmmmm...no. He wrote the play "Glengarry Glen Ross" and the 1987 film "The Untouchables." How about #4, Eugene O'Neill...PLAYS?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. SAX 2. PLAYS 3. SAX 4. PLAYS 5. SAX 6. SAX 7. PLAYS
ME: Of course. 3 down, 2 to go, with 3 answers left to check. Is #5, John Coltrane, a SAX player?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. SAX 2. PLAYS 3. SAX 4. PLAYS 5. SAX 6. SAX 7. PLAYS
ME: Oh, yeah! Known for his 1960 rendition of the song "My Favorite Things" from "The Sound of Music." One more...is #6, Stan Getz, a SAX player, too?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. SAX 2. PLAYS 3. SAX 4. PLAYS 5. SAX 6. SAX 7. PLAYS
$5,000
ME: You know it! By the way, you got #7 right, too! Thornton Wilder wrote "Our Town." You have $5,000, and now you are eligible to try for...
$10,000
ME: But, to win the money, you must give me SIX right answers this time in one of these two subjects...
PRESIDENTIAL PERSPECTIVES or MUSICAL NUMBERS
ME: In PRESIDENTIAL PERSPECTIVES, I'll name some events, and you tell me if they happened during the Presidency of one of our Presidents. In MUSICAL NUMBERS, I'll name showtunes and you name the musical, from two options. You can pick one of those subjects, or take the $5,000 and run. What do you want to do?
(Audience yells suggestions)

Both categories sound tantalizing. I consider myself a novice Presidential historian, so I'll play on and go for the Presidential category Jon!

ME: He's going for it! (Applause) Well, you did well with the history categories earlier today in the front game, so I think you'll have little to no trouble here. Remember, we need SIX correct answers this time. Listen carefully.
(Lights darken)
I'll name seven events. Your job is to tell me...
DID THEY HAPPEN during the Presidency of RICHARD NIXON?
ME: Just answer YES or NO - did they happen during Nixon's Presidency. Begin with...
1. Construction began on America's 1st nuclear sub 2. Leonid Brezhnev became Soviet leader 3. Neil Armstrong walked on the moon 4. Arab nations imposed an oil embargo against the U.S. 5. Mt. St. Helens erupted in Washington 6. The 1st Woodstock Festival took place 7. Watson and Crick discovered the structure of DNA

(Bells ring as Bill gives his last answer)
ME: Good job. Let's post the answers.
1. No 2. No 3. Yes 4. Yes 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: And, we'll check 'em. First things first, let's establish some context: Richard Nixon was President from 1969 to 1974, when he resigned. Those are the dates we are looking for. I'm almost certain you're right on #3. I saw the film "Apollo 13" on TV not too long ago, and I remember that it was set in 1970. Neil Armstrong was on Apollo 11, so it couldn't have been too far behind, couldn't it? Computer?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. No 3. Yes 4. Yes 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: July 20, 1969. Way to go. Five more for ten grand. Let's look at #4. I know there were two energy crises in the 1970s, but is the one in question the first one...the one that happened in the early '70s? Computer?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. No 3. Yes 4. Yes 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: 1973. #6, Woodstock, the seminal event of the 1960s, but was that during the Nixon years, computer?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. No 3. Yes 4. Yes 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: 1969 again. I'm not sure on #2, though; after all, Nixon, Kissinger, and Brezhnev were pretty tight (Laughter). The key here was "BECAME Soviet leader." Was he already the leader of the U.S.S.R. when Nixon became President, computer?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. No 3. Yes 4. Yes 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: Sure was! In 1964, in fact. You're batting 1.000, Bill! Hmmm...#5, Mt. St. Helens. I remember reading about that eruption in a children's book I had back in the 1980s. I'm sure it was during that decade. Computer, are we right in that assumption?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. No 3. Yes 4. Yes 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: We were. May of 1980, during the Carter Presidency. One more to go, Bill. Let's examine #1, nuclear sub. I know that nuclear power was a hot topic during the 1950s, when Nixon was VICE President. But, again, it comes down to the wording of the question...did the construction BEGIN during Nixon's Presidency? You said NO. If you're right, it's $10,000. If wrong, then it all hinges on one answer. Computer, give me the verdict on #1.....
(...computer takes a while)
ME: Typical computers...they always take a while to do what you want them to do! (Audience laughs and applauds)
(After everything settles....CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. No 3. Yes 4. Yes 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
$10,000
ME: BOOOOOOOOOM! 1952, as a matter of fact. Also, #7 was right, too! Watson and Crick discovered DNA in 1953. Perfectly played, sir! Now, you qualify for the chance to win...
$20,000
ME: The big enchilada. However, the risk is highest here, as you MUST PLAY PERFECTLY. Seven out of seven this time, but hey...you did it on the last question, why not do it again?! You can back out, or choose from these two topics...
TOURIST TRAP or STATE STACK-UP
ME: In TOURIST TRAP, I ask you questions about tourism and tourist attractions. In STATE STACK-UP, I'll give you a pair of states and a question, and you choose the state that answers the question correctly. Bill, with $20,000 on the line....what do you want to do?
(Audience yells suggestions)

ME: He's gonna go for it all!
(Audience applauds as the lights dim one last time)
ME: By the way, the TOURIST TRAP question was on U.S. tourist attractions. This STATE STACK-UP, though, might test your wits quite well. No room for error here, though, since you must be right on ALL SEVEN. So, for $20,000 or nothing...
I'll give seven pairs of U.S. states. For each pair, tell me...
WHICH STATE has the HIGHER POPULATION?
ME: Just tell me the more populated state. Ready? Start with...
1. Georgia or Virginia? 2. Illinois or Michigan? 3. Colorado or Arizona? 4. Nevada or Missouri? 5. Ohio or Pennsylvania? 6. Texas or New York? 7. Hawaii or Alaska?

1. Georgia or Virginia? I'm thinking Georgia since Atlanta is a major city, whereas Richmond is probably the biggest city Va has, plus Georgia has many pro sports team, VA has none. 2. Illinois or Michigan? I'm going with Illinois since Chicago itself is very heavily populated still while Detroit has become sadly more of a ghosttown. 3. Colorado or Arizona? Arizona since the climate is more favorable there. 4. Nevada or Missouri? Missouri I'll say since there's St. Louis and Kansas City whereas Nevada is a lot of desert. 5. Ohio or Pennsylvania? Going by electoral votes, PA has more than Ohio, therefore I reason Pennsylvania has a larger population, plus Philly is a huge city population and Pittsburgh is too. 6. Texas or New York? Again, going by electoral vote knowledge, Texas I believe has more people. 7. Hawaii or Alaska? Using the same logic with question 3, I'll say Hawaii has more people due to the more favorable and habitable climate plus Hawaii has 4 electoral votes, Alaska just 3.
Locking all of these in as my final answer.

(Bells as Bill finishes)
ME: OK. We have your well-reasoned answers, and we will post them on the screen now.
1. Georgia 2. Illinois 3. Arizona 4. Missouri 5. Pennsylvania 6. Texas 7. Hawaii
ME: A lot of your logic seems to be based on electoral votes. Generally, states with higher electoral votes have higher populations. We shall see, though. I will tell you that our computer can tell us the populations of each state. Let's start with #1, you said Georgia. I will tell you that Virginia has 8.3 million people. Computer, what about Georgia?
1. Georgia (10 million)
(CLANG! Applause)
ME: Good! 10 million. Six to go. Let's check #2. You said Illinois. Michigan has 9.9 million people. What about Illinois, computer?
2. Illinois (12.8 million)
(CLANG! Applause)
ME: Nicely done. Let's proceed with #3, in which you said Arizona. Colorado has some favorable climates, too. For instance, Denver has over 300 days of sunshine yearly. Arizona has some blistering hot temperatures, though. Nonetheless, Colorado has 5.3 million people. Computer, does Arizona have more?
3. Arizona (6.7 million)
(CLANG! Applause)
ME: What a surprise! It does! Let's go to #4. You said Missouri. Nevada has 2.8 million people. Computer, is Missouri more populated?
4. Missouri (6.1 million)
(CLANG! Applause)
ME: Oh, yeah! St. Louis and Kansas City both make a big contribution to that. On to #5, in which you said your home state of Pennsylvania. Ohio has some big cities with Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus, but so does Pennsylvania. Ohio's population is 11.6 million. Computer, we hope that Pennsylvania has more. Does it?
5. Pennsylvania (12.8 million)
(CLANG! Applause)
ME: Phew! Barely! I'm sure you're feeling great so far, eh, Bill?

ME: For #6, you said Texas. Biggest in size of the Lower 48, but is it bigger in population than the Empire State? Well, New York has 19.8 million people. Pretty big...computer, what about the Lone Star State?
(CLANG! Applause)
6. Texas (27 million)
ME: Second only to California in population. You are just one answer away from $20,000. It all hinges on whether Hawaii has more people than Alaska. Bill...
ME: ...Alaska has 700,000 people. What about those teeny-tiny Hawaiian islands, though? If they have more...twenty grand. If they have fewer....nada!
(Audience laughs as Bill watches the screen intently)
ME: Enough already! Computer...show us #7!
(Drumroll plays.....)
7. Hawaii (1.4 million)
$20,000
(Second half of "IIR"/"TKO" theme plays as Bill and I celebrate on stage)
ME: He did it! He cleared all four tiers and won $20,000! How do you feel now, Bill?

ME: Very nice. Maybe you'll have my job someday (I look at the camera and mouth "NO WAY!" Laughter). Let's get you that money now, shall we? Our bonus game is played in four tiers. In the first tier, you're playing for...
$2,500
ME: Just like up front, you'll be asked a seven-part question. To win the $2,500, all you have to do is provide me FOUR correct answers. If you do that, you'll have a chance to go double or nothing on the next tier. However, the higher the reward, the higher the risk, so be careful.
ME: We will help you out by allowing you to take the money and run after any tier, and we'll also help by offering a choice of two subjects. Let's get started with the first tier, then. Your category choices are...
(Screen displays)
TITLE TWIST or PERSPECTIVES
ME: Remember, in TITLE TWIST, I'll give titles and you tell me what they are from two choices. In PERSPECTIVES, you'll be asked about the relationships between people and events before, during, or after a time period. What will be your first category?

ME: Nicely done. Let's post your answers, please.
1. THE WHO 2. STALLONE 3. THE WHO 4. THE WHO 5. STALLONE 6. STALLONE 7. THE WHO
ME: Now, we'll check some of them. Let's start with #2, First Blood. I recall that being the first film with John Rambo, so I think you're right on that one. Computer, prove it!
(CLANG! Applause)
1. THE WHO 2. STALLONE 3. THE WHO 4. THE WHO 5. STALLONE 6. STALLONE 7. THE WHO
ME: Very good. #4 looks good, too, as that song is the theme from "CSI: Miami." Computer, are we right in that assumption?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. THE WHO 2. STALLONE 3. THE WHO 4. THE WHO 5. STALLONE 6. STALLONE 7. THE WHO
ME: Uh-huh! Two more to go. I seem to recall the action film "Cliffhanger" with its poster of Stallone hanging off a desert cliff. Computer, is that right for #5?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. THE WHO 2. STALLONE 3. THE WHO 4. THE WHO 5. STALLONE 6. STALLONE 7. THE WHO
ME: Oh, yeah! I think #7 is right, too, although it could be a Stallone film. Computer, may we see #7?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. THE WHO 2. STALLONE 3. THE WHO 4. THE WHO 5. STALLONE 6. STALLONE 7. THE WHO
$2,500
ME: Well played! No mistakes on that one, by the way. You got every one right! OK, you have $2,500, but how would you like to double to...
$5,000
ME: All you have to do is give me FIVE correct answers in one of these two subjects...
(Screen displays)
ON THE ROAD or TOURIST TRAP
ME: In ON THE ROAD, I ask you questions about vehicles and transportation. In TOURIST TRAP, I ask you about tourism and tourist attractions. You can choose one of those two subjects, risking the $2,500, or quit now and take the money. What's your pleasure?

ME: OK, let's post your answers.
1. No 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. No 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: And let's review. If it were me, I'd use a little logic. #1, the National Gallery. If it's the National Gallery, I don't think it would be in New York. I would think it's in Washington, DC. Computer, are we right to assume that?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. No 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: We are. It is in Washington. Let's go to #2, Guggenheim. My dad's a big enthusiast of Frank Lloyd Wright, and a lot of Wright's work, including the Guggenheim, is in New York. Computer, are we right for #2?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. No 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: We are. Let's go down to #5, the Getty Museum. I happen to know from an article I read that Getty's museum is near his home in Calfornia, so computer, let's confirm it.
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. No 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: Malibu, California, to be precise. Two more to go. Hmmm...let's look at $6, the Frick Collection. I'm not too sure about that one, as I know there's a Frick collection of art in Pittsburgh...but is that what we're referring to? Let's find out together. Computer, James says the Frick Collection is in New York. Is he right?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. No 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
ME: By George, he is! I must have been thinking about the Frick CENTER, which is in Pittsburgh. One more to go, and it's looking good. Let's check out the Exploratorium...popular science museum, but is it in the Big Apple? James says NO, but computer, is he right?
(CLANG! Applause)
1. No 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. No 5. No 6. Yes 7. No
$5,000
ME: Well played, sir! Indeed, the Exploratorium is in San Francisco. All the others were right, too! You now have $5,000, which is not chicken feed by any stretch. Now, though, you can try for...
$10,000
ME: All we need is SIX right answers. Here's your choice of topics.
(Screen displays)
CLAIM TO FAME or BUSINESS TIMELINE
ME: In CLAIM TO FAME, you tell me who famous people were, from two choices. In BUSINESS TIMELINE, you tell me when certain events in business history happened. Consider your options. Are you going to play on, or take the $5,000 and leave?
