On our last show, slrcatchphrase got a one-day total of $11,300 in cash. I need a challenger to take him on, and then the show can begin.

(1978 CS Intro)
ERIN HARRIS: Aces are high, deuces are low! Call it right, and win the dough...on Card Sharks! (1978 CS Theme) And now, here's the host of Card Sharks, Bill Skinner!
Thank you very much, Erin Harris, and welcome to the first episode of the New Year on of Card Sharks! We'd like you to give a warm welcome back to our champion slrcatchphrase, and his challenger is mringgenberg. Now players, this is a best-of-three match, and your goal is to guess a series of five cards correctly before your opponent does. But before we get to the cards, we have to go through a series of questions. Our defending champion, slrcatchphrase, will get the first question of the day. We asked 100 people, and here it is:
"Donald Trump will be the 45th President of the United States in 2017. Will he be a good President or a bad President?"
How many of those people said that he would make a bad President?

slrcatchphrase says 64...
ding!
...and mringgenberg, do you believe that the actual number is higher or lower than 64?

Lower
|
|
|
Post by Bill Skinner on Jan 8, 2017 23:20:29 GMT -5
And mringgenberg says that it's lower.
ding!
Well, the actual number of people who said that Trump would make a bad president is...
ding-ding-ding!
...67, so it's not lower, and slrcatchphrase gets the first draw of the day. But first, let's welcome Amber Lancaster, who will deal the cards for slrcatchphrase, and Tiffany Coyne, who will do the same for mringgenberg. Now Amber, let's see slrcatchphrase's first card.
(9 ♥)
It's a 9, and you can either play it right away or change it in hopes of getting a better card. What is your decision?

Alright, let's change it. What's the new card, please?
(6 ♥)
A 6. I don't know how much that helps, but you have to play it now. Is the next card higher or lower?

Higher than a 6?
(2 ♥)
buzz!
No, it's not, so mringgenberg will get a chance to play, but he must play the first card right now. What is it, Tiffany?
(Q ♣)
A Queen! Now is the next card higher or lower than a Queen?

Lower!
|
|
|
Post by Bill Skinner on Jan 9, 2017 23:10:55 GMT -5
Is it lower than a Queen?
(10 ⋄)
ding!
Yes, it is! So now you have the option to keep playing or freeze. What would you like to do?

I'll Freeze
|
|
|
Post by Bill Skinner on Jan 9, 2017 23:53:51 GMT -5
Let's freeze at the 10, and get into a new question. This time, it's mringgenberg who will answer it, and we asked 100 sports fans:
"As you know, the Chicago Cubs are the World Series champions of 2016. Are you happy with the result?"
How many of these people answered yes to that question?

mringgenberg says 27.
ding!
Now slrcatchphrase, is the actual number higher or lower than 27?

higher

Post by Bill Skinner on Jan 10, 2017 11:21:27 GMT -5
slrcatchphrase says higher on that one.
ding!
And the actual number of people who said that they were happy with the Cubs winning the World Series is...
ding-ding-ding!
...83, so it is higher, and once again, slrcatchphrase will play his cards first. Here's the new base card that you will start from.
(3 ♥)
A 3! Would you like to pay it now, or change it?

Higher than a 3?
(A ♥)
ding!

Unless there's another Ace, you'll be able to play on. Lower than an Ace?
(J ♥)
ding!
Yes, it's a Jack! So you're halfway to a win here. What's your decision on that?

Could be Queen, King or Ace....
....... Freeze!

I thought for a second you would move on, but we'll freeze at the Queen and get into our third question of the round. Again, slrcatchphrase will answer this question. We asked 100 people:
"Have you ever tried to beat a traffic ticket by bribing or sweet-talking the arresting officer?"
How many of those people said yes?

So slrcatchphrase says 57...
ding!
...and mringgenberg, is the actual number higher or lower than 57?
